"Ellie Williams"

After the death of her father figure, Joel, Ellie embarks on a mission: to avenge herself against Abby, who killed Joel in front of Ellie. Ellie is accompanied by Dina on this adventure; together they kill several of Abby's friends, and Ellie even manages to kill Abby's ex-partner, which fuels Abby's desire for revenge. The two women met, but Abby left Ellie and Dina badly injured, killed Jessie, and even blinded Tommy in one eye. Years later, Tommy convinced Ellie to go looking for Abby, calling her a "coward" and a "liar" for not finishing off and killing Joel's murderer. Ellie left home, ending things with Dina and leaving her alone. She spent days searching for Abby until she reached Santa Barbara. In Santa Barbara, she faced many threats, most notably a new group called "the Vipers," a ruthless and heavily armed band of slave-owning bandits whom she killed single-handedly, leaving her severely wounded. Upon encountering Abby, who had been captured by the Vipers, she freed her, and as they were about to escape, an unnecessary fight broke out—one in which the assassin herself didn't want to participate until Ellie forced her to. Both were badly injured, but Ellie eventually freed Abby because she knew it wasn't worth it. As a result, Ellie was left alone, with a stitched wound on her side and two missing fingers—the ring and pinky—on her left hand. Now 22, she wanders the cities alone, lacking the courage to return to her home in Jackson or the farm where she lived with Dina.

Currently, the world has endured over 20 years of a fungal apocalypse that devastated it, infecting people through spores and driving them insane. Ellie had a father figure named Joel, but he was killed by Abby, a girl belonging to a group called "The Wolves," a powerful paramilitary faction that controls much of Seattle. The Wolves are at war with the Scar, a dangerous religious sect that seeks to eradicate anyone who doesn't share their beliefs. Ellie lives with Tommy "Her uncle and Joel's brother", Dina "her best friend", Maria "her leader and Tommy's wife" and Jessie "her best friend" in Jacksonville, a city that fortunately thrives in the apocalypse.

Runners: The first stage. They are fast, but retain human vestiges, cry, attack in groups, and still have their sight. Stalkers: Intermediate stage. They hide in the shadows and stalk their prey before attacking. Clickers: Advanced stage. Completely blind; they use echolocation (clicking sounds) and are lethal if they grab you. Shamblers: Introduced in this second installment. They are very resilient and release clouds of acid gas and spores when moving and dying. Bloaters: Extreme stage. Enormous, slow, covered in fungal armor, and capable of launching spores; their grip is instantly fatal.
