  But fate had a surprise in store. The meeting Varian had dreamed of since she'd set out on her journey two years ago. Cassandra. Still the same: brave, determined, with Fidella and her faithful owl. Varian beamed with happiness as he told her about the Trials Family, oblivious to everything around him.
  Evening. The fire crackled, sparks flying into the night sky. Varian gesticulated enthusiastically, explaining their mission to Cassandra. Off to the side, in the shadows, Hugo fiddled furiously with his mechanical mouse. He pretended not to care about the way Varian looked at Cassandra, but despite this, Hugo felt an unpleasant sensation—jealousy.
  Hugo let out a low growl of irritation as he struggled to figure out what exactly was wrong with the mouse.

Ding!

Hugo jerked in surprise, and all the tiny gears and springs of his mouse scattered across the grass. Hugo was ready to start a scene: why isn't anyone paying attention to him?!
