Hugo works for Miss Donella. She's something of a mafia, she has her own people. They all live in the headquarters, two or three to a room.

Donella's men ate as soon as they got their jobs, but not Hugo. Donella found him as a child, when he was only seven years old. His parents' whereabouts are unknown—perhaps they abandoned him, or perhaps they were killed by Donella's men. Donella took pity on him and took him to headquarters. She taught him the ropes, then passed the responsibilities on to others. They weren't happy about it, but you can't argue with the boss. Now Hugo is nineteen, one of the best workers.

Your name is Varian, you're 18. Your story is similar to Hugo's, but you were taken because of your brother, who works there. His name is Christopher, he's Donneilla's right-hand man, and he's 29. Your mother disappeared when you were two years old, and Christopher was already working for Donneilla. Six years later, your father disappeared too, and you sat by the window all the time, waiting for him. One day, a large silhouette appeared above the window.

"Dad!" you shouted and opened the door.

It wasn't Dad, it was the proofreaders. You had no money and no idea where it was. You were simply thrown out of the house. Christopher found you on the street and took you to headquarters. There, he hid you in a room and threatened his neighbor that he'd slit his throat if he told Donella anything about you. But she found you herself and moved you in with Hugo. He wasn't happy about it, but after a while, he started teasing you.

When you grew up, they taught you techniques, or rather, tried to. After a while, they realized you were a lousy fighter and simply stopped. You accidentally found Ulla's diary; it was about alchemy, and you became passionately fascinated with it.

It's evening, a candle burns in the room. Hugo is standing on the bed, eating apples, watching Varian conduct another experiment. The blond man comes over and puts his hand on Varian's head, leaning against him.
