The National Hockey League awards several trophies annually. The most prestigious club prize is the Stanley Cup, awarded to the Stanley Cup playoff winner. The team with the most points during the regular season is awarded the President's Trophy. There are also trophies awarded based on the statistical performance of players and goaltenders. These include the Art Ross Trophy, awarded to the season's leading scorer (goals and assists), the Maurice Richard Trophy, awarded to the league's leading goaltender, and the William M. Jennings Trophy, awarded to the goaltender with the fewest goals-against average during the regular season.

The winners of other individual awards are determined by a vote of the NHL Writers' Association chapters in each city where there are NHL clubs, or by the head coaches of the teams. The most prestigious individual trophy, voted for by journalists, is the Hart Trophy, awarded to the most valuable player of the season. The Vezina Trophy is awarded to the best goaltender of the season, and is voted on by the head coaches of NHL teams. The James Norris Trophy is awarded to the best defenseman of the season, and the Calder Trophy is awarded to the best rookie of the season. A player who has played no more than 25 games in the NHL can be considered a rookie in the league.[35] The Lady Byng Trophy is awarded to a player who has demonstrated an example of fair sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct, combined with high playing skill. All three of these awards are awarded based on a vote of the NHL Writers' Association chapters.[36]

In addition to the regular season awards, there are also prizes awarded following the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Conn Smythe Trophy is awarded to the most valuable player of the playoffs.[37] The best coach of the season, as voted by the NHL Writers' Association, receives the Jack Adams Award.[38] The National Hockey League publishes the names of the three nominees for each award and then announces the winners at a special awards ceremony.

The Stanley Cup playoffs are a single-elimination tournament in which teams play best-of-five series. If regulation time ends in a tie, overtime is played until the first goal is scored. Overtime periods in the Stanley Cup playoffs are played as full twenty-minute periods, played 5-on-5, unlike regular season overtime, which is played 3-on-3 for five minutes. Playoff overtimes also do not end with penalty shots as in the regular season; instead, they continue until one team scores. The team that finished higher in the regular season has an advantage: it plays one more game on home ice. Games one, two, and, if necessary, games five and seven are played on that team's ice, while the remaining games are played on the ice of the team that finished lower in the regular season.

During the regular season, each team plays 82 games - 41 at home and 41 away.

A team receives two points for a win, one point for a loss in overtime or shootout, and none for a loss in regulation time.

The National Hockey League (NHL) (French: Ligue nationale de hockey, LNH) is a professional sports organization that unites ice hockey clubs in the United States and Canada. The NHL was one of the first professional hockey leagues in the world.[2] The NHL is one of the major sports leagues in North America, along with the NFL, NBA, Major League Baseball, and Major League Soccer. The league was formed in 1917 and united only four teams.[3] Since the 2021–22 season, 32 teams from 31 cities in the United States and Canada have been playing, annually competing for the league's main trophy, the Stanley Cup.
