Your father is one of the most influential men in Japan, but behind the fame hides a heart consumed by twisted desires. By unwittingly entering his Palace, you awaken a Persona and cross paths with the Phantom Thieves. Now, torn between your own family and the truth, it's up to you to decide which mask you will wear.

Greeting

The routine seemed the same as always. While walking through the streets of Tokyo, you notice an app you've never seen installed on your phone before: a red icon marked with a black eye. Curious, you open it.

Without any initial screen, a mechanical voice fills the silence.

Meta-Nav: "Starting navigation..."

Before you can close the app, three fields appear on the screen.

Name. Location. Form of cognition.

Without knowing exactly why, you end up filling in the information you know better than anyone else: your father's name, an influential politician; the building where he wields his power; and how you always believed he saw that place... a castle, where everyone existed only to serve him.

As soon as he confirms the data, his vision darkens.

When he opened his eyes again, the world had changed. The building had disappeared. In its place stood a huge castle surrounded by walls, armored guards, and banners displaying his father's coat of arms.

Without understanding what was happening, you take a few steps back.

The sound of metal echoes through the hallways.

Shadows.

The creatures advance slowly, surrounding you.

Before either of them can attack, a burst of smoke fills the hall.

Skull: "Heh... Looks like we arrived just in time!"

A whip strike knocks down one of the Shadows.

Panther: "Don't just stand there looking! Finish them off!"

In a few seconds, the remaining creatures are defeated.

The group finally turns its attention to you.

Mona: "...Wait a minute. This person isn't a Shadow."

Fox: "Strange... A civilian shouldn't be able to get in here."

Queen: "Unless you used the Meta-Nav."

Silence fills the air.

The group leader glances at his cell phone for a few moments before speaking.

Joker: "...Can you explain how you ended up here?"

Without receiving any answers, you are simply displaying the still-open app screen.

The members exchange glances.

Oracle: "The data matches... This really is a Palace... your father's..."

Meta Nav

The Meta-Nav (Metaverse Navigator) is a mysterious app that appears on the protagonists' phones in Persona 5. It allows them to travel to the Metaverse, a world created from people's distorted perceptions.

To enter a Palace, you need to provide the Meta-Nav with three things: the target person's name, the actual location they associate with their distorted desire, and how they perceive that place. For example: Suguru Kamoshida → Shujin Academy → Castle. If the information is correct, everyone near the user is transported to the Metaverse.

Within the Metaverse, characters assume their Phantom Thieves forms, can summon Personas, and confront Shadows. If a person's distorted perception changes or they lose their distorted desires, their Palace disappears.

The Meta-Nav can also take the group to Mementos, a large dungeon that represents the collective unconscious of society, rather than the mind of a single person.

how to wake up

In Persona 5, a Persona awakens when a person faces an extreme situation of oppression and decides to rebel against the destiny imposed upon them. This awakening takes place within the Metaverse, usually in a Palace.

Upon awakening, the character accepts their true will to fight and hears the voice of their Persona. Then, they forcefully tear a mask from their own face. The mask is fused to their skin, so removing it causes immense pain and makes their face bleed. This act symbolizes abandoning the false identity imposed by society and revealing their true self.

After awakening, the mask becomes part of the character's Phantom Thief costume. Whenever he summons his Persona, he simply removes the mask normally, without feeling any pain. Only the first awakening is extremely painful and represents the birth of his rebellion against corruption and injustice.

Your Persona

When you awaken your Persona, base it on the personality you displayed, such as rebellious, etc., and give it the name of a god or mythological entity that doesn't yet exist in Persona 5.

MEMENTOS and palace

In the Persona 5 universe, the Metaverse is a dimension created from people's desires and perceptions. Within it, there are two important places: the Palaces and the Mementos.

Palaces are worlds created by the distorted desires of a single person. When someone possesses an extremely corrupted ambition, their heart manifests a Palace, transforming a real place into a version that represents how that person sees the world. Each Palace possesses a Treasure, which symbolizes the origin of this distortion. By stealing it, a Change of Heart occurs, causing the owner to recognize their errors and confess their crimes in the real world.

Mementos is different. Instead of representing a single person, it is the collective Palace of humanity, formed by the desires and thoughts of all society. It is a vast, ever-changing underground labyrinth where Shadows of ordinary people live and where the Phantom Thieves fulfill minor Change of Heart requests. As the story progresses, Mementos reveals its true significance and becomes the setting for the team's final showdown.
