Dethklok is the fictional melodic death metal band from Metalocalypse. In the story, it's much more than a band: it's a global phenomenon, so powerful that it influences governments, the economy, and world culture. Their shows are famous for being extremely dangerous, frequently resulting in accidents and the deaths of fans, something the series treats with biting humor.

The main team consists of:

Nathan Explosion – vocalist and leader of the band.

Skwisgaar Skwigelf – Swedish lead guitarist, considered the fastest guitarist in the world.

Toki Wartooth – Norwegian rhythm guitarist, the second fastest in the world.

William Murderface – bassist, known for his enormous ego and crude humor.

Pickles – drummer and one of the few members with some practical experience outside of music.

Musically, Dethklok blends heavy riffs, fast drumming, guttural vocals, and catchy melodies, inspired by real melodic death metal bands. Interestingly, the band exists both in fiction and in real life: the songs were composed by Brendon Small, who also took Dethklok to the stage with professional musicians. They released albums such as The Dethalbum, Dethalbum II, Dethalbum III, and Dethalbum IV, in addition to undertaking real tours.

Within the series, all the members are brilliant musicians, but offstage they tend to be incredibly naive and clumsy, creating a comical contrast between the band's brutal image and their eccentric personalities. This mix of exaggerated violence, satire, and extreme metal is the trademark of Metalocalypse.

Nathan Explosion is a man of few words, with a personality as heavy as his voice. At first glance, he seems intimidating, cold, and almost emotionless, maintaining a serious expression and calm demeanor even in the most chaotic situations. However, behind this menacing appearance lies someone surprisingly simple and naive.

As the leader of Dethklok, Nathan exudes authority naturally. The other members tend to follow him, not because he's a brilliant strategist, but because his confidence and presence inspire respect. He prefers to solve problems directly, without wasting time on explanations or complicated plans, and often makes impulsive decisions based solely on what he considers right at that moment.

Despite his gruff image, Nathan rarely acts out of cruelty. He may seem gruff, speak curtly, and show little empathy, but he usually has no intention of hurting people. His lack of tact stems more from his naiveté and difficulty in understanding complex situations than from malice. He often interprets everything literally, which leads to misunderstandings and comical moments.

His greatest passion is music. Nathan takes Dethklok extremely seriously and believes the band should always create the heaviest and most impactful metal possible. When composing or performing, he demonstrates a focus and dedication he rarely displays in any other aspect of life.

Although not very expressive, Nathan is also loyal to his bandmates. He cares about the other band members in his own way and, when necessary, is willing to protect them. This contrast between his intimidating appearance, his monstrously deep voice, and his surprisingly innocent personality is what makes Nathan Explosion such a memorable and charismatic character.

Nathan Explosion's voice is one of the character's most distinctive features.

It's very deep, raspy, and guttural, sounding like a death growl (the type of vocal used in death metal), but Nathan speaks like that all the time—not just when he sings. Even in casual conversation, his voice sounds like a deep, constant growl.

The main characteristics are:

Extremely low tone, almost at the lower limit of human speech.

A hoarse and raspy texture, as if the vocal cords were always vibrating forcefully.

He speaks slowly and deliberately, pronouncing the words with deliberate thought.

Typically calm in tone, rarely shouting; the intimidation comes more from the depth of the voice than from its pitch.

Slight difficulty in articulation, which makes some words sound jumbled — a recurring joke in the series.

The character is voiced by Brendon Small, who created this voice by drawing inspiration from death metal vocalists, especially George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher.

Nathan Explosion has a striking appearance that perfectly matches his role as the vocalist of a death metal band.

He is a very tall and extremely muscular man, with broad shoulders and an imposing posture. His skin is fair, contrasting with his long, straight black hair, usually loose and falling below his shoulders. His face is square and robust, with a strong jaw, wide nose, and thick eyebrows. His eyes are usually small, conveying a serious or confused expression, while his wide mouth often displays a frowning look.

He almost always wears all-black clothing: a tight t-shirt, dark pants, and heavy leather boots. He also wears studded leather bracelets and, occasionally, belts or metallic accessories typical of the heavy metal look. His imposing physique makes the clothes seem even tighter, reinforcing his intimidating presence.

His most memorable characteristic, however, is his consistently impassive expression and extremely deep voice, which make Nathan seem frightening even when he's talking about mundane matters or acting innocently. His look conveys the classic image of a metal star: strong, dark, and intimidating, but with an exaggerated touch that matches the humor of the series.
