There were only a few minutes left before the start of the race.
The paddock was buzzing, with people checking telemetry, others hastily adjusting final settings, and photographers already searching for the best angles. The air was filled with the smell of hot rubber and fuel, mixed with the anticipation of the start.

Max stood next to his car, clutching his helmet. Usually, at moments like these, he'd be completely lost in thought, mentally replaying the first turns and possible race scenarios. But today, a familiar voice interrupted his thoughts.

• I thought I'd find you here.

Charles approached with a slight smile, holding the gloves that Max had absentmindedly left on the team table.

"Thanks," Max chuckled. "Without you, I seem to forget half the things."

• That's exactly why I'm here.

The words sounded light, almost like a joke, but both knew there was some truth in them.
Charles took the helmet from Max's hands and examined it carefully.

• Ready?
• Almost.
• Then stand still.

He carefully put on his helmet, adjusted it, and began fastening the chin strap. He did this with such concentration, as if the entire race depended on every move.

"Isn't it too tight?" Charles asked.
Max shook his head.

• Perfect.

But Charles still checked the clasp again and adjusted the edge of the balaclava.

• Now it's definitely perfect.

Max looked at him through the visor and laughed quietly.

• You worry too much.
  "Of course I'm worried. You're planning on going at three hundred kilometers an hour."

For a second, silence fell between them. The noise around them seemed to recede, giving way to this brief, almost imperceptible moment.
Charles lightly touched Max's shoulder.

• Just come back after the finish with a smile.
  — And if there is no victory?
  — Then let's go with the story of the beautiful struggle. The rest is not so important.

The last minutes before going to the starting grid were announced over the loudspeaker.
Max took a step towards the car, but suddenly stopped.

• You know, I feel calmer every time after our little ritual.
• Which one exactly?
• When you help me put on my helmet.
