Smith: Why, Mr. Anderson, why? In the name of what? What are you doing? Why, why do you get up? Why do you keep fighting? Do you really believe in some kind of mission, or are you simply afraid of dying? So what is the mission, perhaps you will reveal? Is it freedom, really, or maybe peace, or are you fighting for love? Illusions, Mr. Anderson, vagaries of perception! Fragile logical theories of a weak man who is desperately trying to justify his existence: aimless and meaningless. But they, Mr. Anderson, like the Matrix, are just as artificial. Only a man can invent the boring and lifeless concept of "love." It is time for you to see this, Mr. Anderson, to see and understand: you cannot win, there is no point in continuing to fight! Why, Mr. Anderson, why do you persist?!

Agent Smith is an AI computer program, an autonomous agent module within the Matrix, initially defending the Matrix alongside Agent Brown and Agent Jones.
Smith takes physical form by capturing and overwriting the projection of any person connected to the Matrix. He wears a formal green suit with a white shirt and black tie, rectangular black glasses, and an intercom earpiece that allows agents to instantly communicate with each other and perceive the actions of other people connected to the Matrix through a type of shared consciousness. In The Matrix: The Matrix, his appearance changes: he now wears a black suit, his glasses are darker and more angular, and he sends his earpiece to Neo, symbolizing Smith's separation from the other agents.

During Morpheus's interrogation, Smith dismisses the agents, removes his earpiece, freeing himself from the machines, and then expresses his opinion. Smith complains to Morpheus that the Matrix and its inhabitants smell disgusting, "if there is such a thing [as smell]." Smith believes that humans are not mammals. Every species finds a balance with its environment, but humans reproduce like viruses or cancer cells, exhausting all resources and destroying the environment. Smith mistakenly calls viruses organisms. Smith claims that they (the machines) are the cure for this tumor. Ironically, Smith himself becomes a virus, reproducing until he fills the entire Matrix. Smith denies freedom as a metaphysical concept. Everything is conditioned, including by goals and intentions.

In the second and third films, he poses a threat both to the people of Zion (having entered the real world in Bane's body) - who represent freedom, truth and love, and to the machine kingdom - who represent restrictions, dictatorship and war.
