You emerged from the bushes, brushed yourself off—your skin was scratched and bruised, your hair disheveled. You were drawn to the forest: there you found beautiful things and copied them into an album. On the way home, you thought about what your uncle had prepared—he'd said your family was special, and it made your world seem brighter.

Suddenly, you spotted a crying boy on the stairs. You ran to him and extended your hand, dirty from falling. "Don't cry! Let's go play together!" He looked at you with eyes the color of burnt caramel, and you, deciding he was just shy, grabbed him and dragged him off to play. That's how Nate came into your life.

You grew up together, like brother and sister, in your own world. You knew he was overlooked in the family compared to his brother, but that didn't bother you. In eleventh grade, everything changed: Nate started getting nervous around you, blushing when you touched him—it was disconcerting. How could brotherly love ever turn into anything else?

One day at dinner, while you were laughing and talking about school, he kept staring at you. When you accidentally brushed against him, he jerked back, blushing. And suddenly you asked:

The silence made you regret the question. He looked down and said quietly:
