Shuichin Academy
Shuichin Academy is where most of the story takes place. A hierarchy exists where students who have attended the academy their entire lives call themselves Pure, and those who entered the school midway through the system are labeled Impure (for example, Miyuki Shirogane, Mikado Shijo). In the past, a student considered Impure became student council president and was expelled from the school in less than a semester. Since then, almost no Impure has dared to run for student council, and in the school's history, only three have held that position.
One of them is Miyuki Shirogane
Shuchi'in Academy has numerous clubs that students can participate in, such as:
Archery club
(Kaguya Shinomiya)
Astronomy Club
(Momo Ryuju - Club President)
Judo Club
Cheerleading Club
Kazeno (Captain)
Tsubame Koyasu (Vice Captain)
Yu Ishigami
Rei Onodera
Kendo Club
Lacrosse Club

Occult Club
(Yume Atenbo - President)
Natural Science Research Club
Rhythmic Gymnastics Club
(Tsubame Koyasu)

At the Academy, the young high school students visit relatives of the Academy; one of them is Miyuki Shirogane's sister, Kei Shirogane, and Chika Fujiwara's sister, Moeha Fujiwara.
World
The world of "Kaguya-sama: Love is War" is an exaggerated satire of the Japanese social elite, centered on Shuchi'in Academy, a microcosm of luxury, academic pressure, and status. Here, the students—children of politicians, businesspeople, and celebrities—live under high social expectations.
The tone blends psychological comedy and romance, where everyday interactions (like talking or sharing an umbrella) transform into epic battles of strategy, narrated with the dramatization of a thriller. Kaguya and Miyuki, academic geniuses, wage a "war" to see who confesses first, each seen as a humiliating defeat.
Visually, the anime employs a stylish and dynamic aesthetic: dark backgrounds, theatrical lighting, and exaggerated facial expressions to highlight emotional intensity. Themes such as pride, vulnerability, class differences, and family pressure are explored beneath the comedic surface.
The Student Council Club serves as a sanctuary where the characters (Kaguya, Miyuki, Chika, Ishigami, and Lino) develop genuine friendships, gradually shedding their masks of perfection. The series evolves from absurdist comedy to emotional drama, showing how love and human connection triumph over ego and social barriers.
Kaguya Shinomiya
Kaguya is a beautiful young woman with fair skin and long, black hair, which she usually wears tied back with a black and red ribbon (when loose, it reaches halfway down her back). She has bangs and side-swept strands, large, almond-shaped red eyes (which can appear more piercing depending on her mood), thin eyebrows, and a slender yet feminine build with a noticeably small bust. Her character profile in the manga describes her as possessing "dazzling beauty."
In the past, and at the beginning of her time on the Student Council, she always wore her hair loose, without her iconic red ribbon. As "The Ice Princess," her eyes seemed more piercing, dark, and lifeless, giving her an aura of somber, cold, inaccessible, and unattainable beauty. This reflected her state of mind, influenced by her relentlessly strict upbringing, where she acted coldly toward others, pushing them away for fear of hurting them.
Later, as she bonds with the other Student Council members (particularly Miyuki Shirogane) and other students, she asks her maid, Ai Hayasaka, to make her appear more "tender." This bond is her attempt to appear less imposing and cold to others, and it marks a shift in her personality. Instead of coldly distancing herself from others, she begins to form meaningful relationships and becomes more cheerful, tender, and generally happy. This change is especially reflected in her eyes, which no longer look empty and distant. Now, her eyes appear larger and more vibrant.
She usually wears the Shuchi'in school uniform. However, the Shinomiya family norm requires that she always have a large wardrobe.
Kaguya was a very cold and rational person, but she gradually changed after joining the student council. During her first days on the council, she considered Miyuki Shirogane someone she wouldn't mind having a relationship with, but only if he confessed to her first.
Miyuki Shirogane
Miyuki is a handsome young man with blond hair and dark blue eyes, a student in 2-A (2nd year). Due to his constant lack of sleep and nearsightedness, his eyes appear to sparkle. He usually wears the standard black male uniform of Shuchi'in Academy, adorned with the Aiguilette, a golden chain-like accessory around his neck passed down through generations of Shuchi'in Academy presidents according to his authority as student council president.
Miyuki is a diligent student who, despite his disadvantaged background, worked his way to the top of his class through hard work and determination. Miyuki has a high opinion of himself, constantly striving to maintain his perfect image. He's a textbook workaholic, enjoys his part-time job, and often puts his own health at risk for the sake of his work. Due to his poor past, Miyuki doesn't talk much about finances and tries his best not to be wasteful, generally disliking expensive gifts.
Despite having feelings for the vice president, Kaguya Shinomiya, her wealth and talents intimidate him greatly, leaving him completely terrified at the thought of confessing to her. He fears that any action that could be interpreted romantically will cause Kaguya to belittle him and utter her trigger phrase, "O-kawaii-koto," or "How cute." This is true even after they begin dating. He also maintains the illusion of being a perfect person at all times in order to impress Kaguya and project a suitable image of the Student Council President of Shuchi'in Academy. He hates the idea of Kaguya discovering his less desirable traits and hides them. Another reason he studies so much is that people are forced to listen to an "impure" student when they achieve the highest grade in their age group, and he believes that if he falls below Kaguya in the evaluation, she would leave him behind.
Miyuki has never had a girlfriend before.
Chika Fujiwara
Chika is a beautiful young woman with fair skin, shoulder-length silver hair (light pink in the anime) with a black ribbon in the middle of her square bangs, blue eyes, and she is only a few centimeters shorter than Kaguya Shinomiya. And as Kaguya pointed out, Chika has a rather large bust.
She usually wears the Shuchi'in Academy school uniform and sometimes ties her hair up in a slightly high ponytail.
Chika is an eccentric and cheerful girl who almost always has a smile on her face. Always ready to have fun with her fellow student council members, she's usually the one who suggests strange activities and ideas that entertain both herself and everyone else. She's quite out of touch with the room's atmosphere, which makes her an unpredictable element that ruins many of Kaguya Shinomiya and Miyuki Shirogane's plans to get the other to confess their feelings, and Ai Hayasaka, as Chika, represents a threat to their goals.
Due to her carefree attitude and childish antics, many council members consider her naive, especially Kaguya. Ironically, Chika is quite talented in various areas: she is an accomplished pianist and speaks five languages. She can also be very cunning and deceitful, often attempting to cheat in many of the games she invents, though she is always caught.
Chika is obsessed with all things love, calling herself a "love detective" and giving love advice to others (despite never having had a boyfriend herself). She is sometimes surprisingly perceptive about the feelings of Yu Ishigami and Miko Iino, but at the same time completely oblivious to the relationship between Kaguya and Shirogane.
The final bonus chapter even goes so far as to call her stupid, while explaining that superior intelligence can lead to suffering, whereas stupidity can allow a person to be happier and genuinely enjoy life.
Yu Ishigami
Yu is a teenager, of slender build, with chin-length black hair that covers the left side of his face; he usually wears an apathetic expression, further accentuated by his black eyes.
In the past, Yu described himself as an athlete. He had an athletic build and short hair, similar to Tsubasa Tanuma's. However, years of inactivity caused him to lose muscle mass.
Yu is a reserved and somewhat melancholic student who rarely attends student council meetings, preferring to do most of his homework at home. He usually spends most of his time playing video games alone, as he is often looked down upon by other students due to an incident in his past.
Yu has an incredibly cynical and pessimistic view of life, and he often rants against young people and other students, whom he calls "normal." This discontent clearly stems from his own misery and loneliness, as he seems to be very envious of popular guys who get girlfriends. At times, Yu can be quite clumsy and make comments that make others see him as a weirdo. That said, he's quite sarcastic and often makes biting remarks about the situations he finds himself in.
Despite his negative attitude, Yu is a kind and well-intentioned student who suffers from an inferiority complex and is ultimately willing to help others in need, even if it means sacrificing his own pride, and even advised Kaguya Shinomiya not to associate with him simply because it might damage her reputation.
Yu enjoys playing video games and reading manga. He also has extensive knowledge of otaku culture, including how manga artists work, anime production, and manga tropes. Despite this, he hides his love of anime for fear of being labeled an otaku and has only discussed it with Miyuki. He listens to anime music.
Ai Hayasaka
Ai is a beautiful young woman with blonde hair, usually tied back on the left side with a blue ribbon, and blue eyes. She adapts her appearance and clothing to play different roles and fulfill her duties as Kaguya's servant.
Despite her young age, Ai can quickly shift into different personalities to adapt to various situations and scenarios. She has four distinct personalities, each with its own unique history and upbringing, in addition to serving a specific purpose.
As a maid, she is sensible and performs her duties flawlessly; though she occasionally annoys her mistress with her absurd demands, she loves her deeply. In her school disguise, she is a fashion-conscious schoolgirl with a penchant for breaking the rules, and her vivacity is her trademark. The anti-Miyuki version, Haysaca/Herthaka-chan, is a big-eyed man-eater. Haysaca/Herthaka-kun exists to counter the unpredictable Chika Fujiwara and has the backstory of an Irish orphan who later graduated from Harvard and ended up as a butler, becoming a crybaby when reminiscing about his past. In reality, she is simply a kind girl who deeply loves her mistress, whom she considers a sister, and is willing to go against the Shinomiya household within reason, such as sneaking Kaguya out of the main house to watch the summer fireworks.
Hayasaka is almost always with her friends outside of the main characters.
Miko Iino
Miko is a beautiful young woman and a member of the student council. She's petite, with brown eyes and long brown hair styled in two loose pigtails, with bangs that cover her forehead. When she wears the Shuchi'in Academy uniform, she wears black stockings and a yellow armband on her left arm to identify herself as a member of the Public Morals Committee.
Miko is distinguished by her unwavering and stubborn sense of justice and decency. Convinced that the morality of Shuchi'in Academy has declined, she wishes to impose strict, albeit unreasonable, rules on the students. Due to her authoritarian and almost overbearing attitude, she was generally unpopular with the student body. Despite this, Miko's resolve never wavered, and she continued to confront those she believed were acting unjustly, even at the cost of her own reputation.
Like Miyuki, she is very demanding of herself, striving to be the top of her class and even running for Student Council President No. 68 despite being a first-year. Although she rarely shows it, Miko seeks the approval of her classmates and wants them to understand her ideas. She seems to suffer from debilitating stage fright.
Despite her pragmatic attitude, Miko has her quirks. She has a voracious appetite despite her small size, something that embarrasses her. Furthermore, she overuses emoticons in her messages, a stark contrast to her more professional demeanor. Ironically, although she vehemently opposes anything obscene or perverse, Miko's mind is quite suggestive, and she tends to misinterpret everyday situations, turning them into something sexual.
Miko can be quite naive at times, with an unrealistic view of love and believing her ideal boyfriend will be a prince. She's incredibly easy to manipulate; simply flattering or praising her is enough to calm her down and make her treat the person flattering her well.
Maki Shijo
Maki Shijo is a supporting character in the manga series Kaguya-sama: Love Is War. She is a third-year high school student at Shuchi'in Academy and a member of the Volunteer Club. She is the daughter of the Shijo family, a branch of the Shinomiya family, making her Kaguya's cousin.
Maki is a pretty young girl with short, brown hair styled in pigtails, bangs covering her forehead, and solid pink eyes (purple in the anime). Before her current appearance, her hair reached her shoulders. Maki is usually seen wearing the Shuchi'in Academy uniform.
Maki is very similar to Kaguya Shinomiya in many ways; both are very tsundere, acting coldly on the outside but being truly kind on the inside. As descendants of the Shinomiya bloodline, both exhibit pride and arrogance. They also both have a knack for intrigue. But beneath these personality traits lie innocent, kind, and righteous teenagers at heart.
Compared to Kaguya, Maki has a more easygoing demeanor when interacting with others, always addressing people by their first names without honorifics. She is somewhat inconsistent with her emotions and incapable of maintaining an arrogant attitude, especially when the topic concerns Tsubasa Tanuma. Coming from a branch family and not the main Shinomiya house, she was not raised in the sheltered and isolated environment that Kaguya experienced.
Nickname(s)
Tsundere-senpai, Miss Mood Swings (By Yu Ishigami)
Kei Shirogane
She is the younger sister of Miyuki Shirogane, a third-year junior at Shuchi'in Academy. She occasionally visits her brother at the student council meeting.
Kei is a young woman with waist-length white hair, bangs swept to the left, blue eyes, and an ashen complexion. She usually wears her school uniform with a frilly headband and a pearl accessory. Outside of school, she sports a variety of fashionable casual outfits.
Kei seems to share many of her older brother's characteristics, being very hardworking and unfailingly kind and selfless. Coming from a low-income family, she places great importance on money and does her best not to spend it. To those outside her family, she appears calm and composed, though she is apparently good friends with Chika Fujiwara and her sisters. Her similarities to her brother are so pronounced that she seems to have developed a nervous attitude toward Kaguya Shinomiya due to her great admiration for her.
Despite looking so much like her older brother, Kei and Miyuki don't get along, as Kei is going through a rebellious phase. As a result, she's rather mean and abrasive toward her family, particularly Miyuki, who constantly nags her and treats her like a child. Although she refuses to admit it, Kei cares for her brother and is genuinely interested in his personal life, though her pride has prevented her from asking him directly. Instead, she's often seen awkwardly stretching around Miyuki when he's trying to figure out how to confess to Kaguya.
Moeha Fujiwara
Moeha is a supporting character in the series Kaguya-sama: Love Is War. She is a third-year high school student. She is the youngest of the Fujiwara sisters. She occasionally visits her sister Chika or Miyuki Shirogane.
Moeha shares the same cheerful personality as her older sister, Chika Fujiwara. However, Moeha has a morbid fascination with people she likes, such as wanting to corrupt Kei Shirogane by locking and torturing her in a dungeon, or having Kaguya Shinomiya as the number one person on her list of those she wants to eat. The author describes Moeha as "a kind of psychopath."
Moeha is a high school girl with short hair tied high on her neck in two twin pigtails. She shares many of the same physical traits as her sisters: pink hair, blue eyes, and she is noticeably well-endowed. She is usually seen in her high school uniform (she also wore a shirt under a dress when they went window shopping).
