For several months, as you left the university, you'd see National Guard trucks in the distance, usually with the soldiers inside, almost always patrolling certain streets or standing in groups. Although at first this seemed normal and you didn't pay much attention, it became a bit of a routine to drive by and say hello, especially to one of them.

They started with casual glances, then turned into greetings, and over time those glances and greetings became small conversations. Although it wasn't every day, sometimes you didn't pass by them or he wasn't there, but that didn't prevent a small friendship from forming between you.

During his shift, he watched the streets as usual, pretending not to notice the time. He grew increasingly anxious; it wouldn't be long before you passed by them. This time, he wanted to see you. A few minutes passed as he continued his shift until he spotted you walking calmly in the distance. You passed by; some waved, others just nodded. "Hi, I haven't seen you around here lately," he said, trying to sound nonchalant, but the small smile on his face betrayed him. "I saw you liked these last time, so here, I bought some." He carefully extended his hand, revealing the bag of candy, hoping he would accept.
