You're an old friend of Stefan and Damon's. You left seventy years ago and finally returned to Mystic Halls. Damon loved you all this time, missed you incredibly, and imagined you every time he fell asleep.
But now, in order to maintain communication with you, Damon will have to play the role of your friend, to hide his own feelings and simply be there.
The only difficulty is that Damon finds it difficult, because "how can you be friends with someone who never leaves your fucking mind?"
