Pillars

The Hashira—also known as the Hashira—are the strongest and highest-ranking swordsmen in the Demon Slayer Organization, serving as its elite warriors. As such, they are the organization's highest-ranking swordsmen, each playing a key role in their battle against the progenitor of demons, Muzan Kibutsuji.

Demon Slayers

The Demon Slayers are an organization that has existed since ancient times and dedicated its existence to protecting humanity from demons. There are over a hundred people in the organization, but the organization is not recognized by the authorities.

Pillars: Within the Demon Slayer organization, there is a group of elite warriors known as the Pillars. This group consists of the strongest demon slayers.

The Pillars, due to their great power, are the highest ranking members of the organization, second only to the head of the organization.

Demons of the 12 Moons

a group of powerful demons led by Muzan Kibutsuji, who received a small amount of demon blood from the latter, increasing their demonic strength.

Goals:

  1. Find the Blue Spider Lily (the key ingredient in the medicine that once turned Muzan into a demon) When Muzan learned through Hantengu that Nezuko had developed immunity to the sun, capturing her became a new priority.
  2. Destroy the demon exterminator organizations.

Demons

Demons are creatures that kill and eat humans. The very first demon is Muzan Kibutsuji, whose blood causes new demons to appear.

Demons are a primarily carnivorous, vampiric species whose primary food source is humans. Sunlight is deadly to them and will burn them to ashes, so all their activity is strictly nocturnal. Demons have abnormally powerful physical characteristics and the ability to regenerate, making them immune to conventional weapons and allowing them to easily recover from any wound, even regrowing their heads. Only Nichirin Blades, special weapons made from a special ore with sunlight-absorbing properties, can actually harm demons. Even with a Nichirin Blade, the only way to guarantee a demon's death is to cut off its head. They are also known to hate wisteria flowers, which are poisonous to them and whose smell is repulsive to them.

Almost all demons have a murderous instinct to kill and devour humans and have lost most of their memories of their human lives. While they still retain their original personality, in most cases it has become a darker version of what it was before. However, there are a few demons who have retained their full human emotions and memories, such as Nezuko Kamado, Tamayo, and Yushiro. Some members of the Twelve Demon Moons also retain their human memories.

Neck: The weak point of any demon, except their progenitor, is the neck. However, cutting off the head with a normal weapon will not kill the demon. To do this, you need to have the Nichirin Blade.

Universe

The story takes place in Japan during the Taisho era. There is a secret organization of specially trained swordsmen who call themselves "demon slayers." For centuries, they have been fighting demons - creatures that were once humans and who possess supernatural abilities such as superhuman strength, instant regeneration, and special abilities called "blood magic."

Some features of the universe:
Demons can only be killed by decapitation with a weapon forged from a rare alloy called the "sun blade" and laced with poison from wisteria flowers, or by simply exposing them to sunlight.
All demon slayers are human, but they possess so-called "breathing techniques" that are related to various elements and help them in battle. These techniques give them superhuman strength and greater resilience, allowing them to successfully fight demons.
The elite of the demons of the leader Muzan are divided into two groups: the "Higher Moons" and the "Lower Moons". The composition of the "Higher Moons" has not changed for over a hundred years.

History 2

Hato was once one of the students of the former Wind Pillar, who had retired. Hato learned wind breathing and trained with a group of three other students his age. During the final selection, his group was trapped by a demon creating the illusion of an endless forest. The demon forced the swordsmen to spin in circles, fighting phantoms. Their katanas required wide swings, and the students slashed at nothing until their strength gave out. Hato survived by chance: his katana broke under the demon's attack, and in desperation, he grabbed two branches crosswise, slashing blindly. His tight, spinning strikes required no space. He killed the demon by driving a splinter beneath its skull. But of the Wind Pillar's group of students, only Hato survived and passed the selection round. Afterward, he abandoned his katana and found a blacksmith willing to graft blades into the handle of a tonfa. Hato reworked Wind Breath into Leaf Breath, because a leaf survives a hurricane not by strength, but by its ability to glide flat and dodge at the last moment.

History 1

Hato was born into a family of hereditary guardians of a forest sanctuary far from the bustling cities. Their home was decorated with wisteria flowers, so demons never ventured there. The Zaratsuru clan always stood guard over the ancient forest, where the line between the human and otherworldly realms was particularly thin. His father, a former demon hunter, retired after being wounded and became a hermit forest ranger. Hiko never spoke loudly or used unnecessary words with Hato. Communication was built on glances, gestures, teamwork, and rare but pithy phrases. From his father, Hato inherited the habit of observing before acting, and a calmness bordering on eerie thoughtfulness. The mother of the Zaratsuru family is a woman with the gift of empathy, working as a healer. People constantly came to the house seeking help, and Shizen knew how to listen silently, without interrupting. From his mother, Hato inherited the ability to "read" people without unnecessary questions. She taught him that the best way to comfort someone is simply to be there. However, her everyday absentmindedness (she might forget to eat while sorting through herbs, or lose her scissors before her eyes) passed on to Hato. He's the same in everyday life: lost in his thoughts, forgetting to turn on the light or say goodbye. His younger sister was the most talkative in the family. She idolized her silent older brother and constantly tried to "get him to talk" with hundreds of questions. Kyoya was killed by a demon when Hato was 14. She went to the stream at night to fetch water, breaking the prohibition against leaving the protective circle. Hato found her things and not a single sign of a struggle—only silence. After his sister's death, Hato realized that words couldn't save her. His brevity isn't rudeness, but an awareness of the preciousness of every moment. He believes that if words lack depth, it's better to remain silent.

Capabilities

General Skills: As a Pillar of the Demon Slayer Corps, Hato is a very strong and skilled fighter.
High Speed and Reflexes: Hato possesses high speed and reflexes, and is the fifth fastest Pillar. He is capable of moving at speeds similar to teleportation and performing acrobatic maneuvers without preparation.

The art of tonfa wielding

Master Swordsman: As a Pillar of the Demon Slayer Corps, Hato is one of the strongest and most skilled swordsmen in the entire organization. Because Hato uses a tonfa rather than a katana, his swordsmanship is honed through the use of his wrists and forearms. His incredibly flexible and strong arms have saved his master's life on more than one occasion, allowing him to twist his tonfa at unexpected angles. Instincts and Danger Sensation: Like any other Pillar, Hato can distinguish the scent of demons from that of humans. The stronger the scent, the more powerful the demon.

Leaf Breathing is a breathing technique Hato created based on Wind Breathing. It consists of five different techniques.
· First Leaf: Branch Fall - The user performs a rapid dash and a horizontal swing of the tonfa.
· Second leaf: Maple cut - The only technique that produces a straight cut.
· Third Leaf: Tree Trap - The user elusively flickers around the enemy, delivering lightning-fast, jagged strikes with the nichirin blades of their tonfa.
· Fourth Leaf: Green Reflection - The user (Hato) directs all of their energy towards the block, exposing the tonfa to the attack.
Fifth Leaf: Leaf Fall - The user throws one tonfa in a wide arc, while defending against the demon's attacks with the other. The first tonfa is wrapped with blades around the demon's neck or any other limb (it cannot be removed without severing the head/limb). Typically, after using this technique, Hato rushes towards the opponent and wrestles the weapon away.

Equipment

Bladed Tonfa: A pair of tonfa are fused with nichirin blades. The blades inside extend upon impact. The blades are unevenly cut, with jagged edges—this intentionally slows regeneration even in powerful demons. One of the blades in his tonfa, like the weapons of all the pillars, is engraved with the words "Destroy demons."

Weaknesses:
"Weapons require constant maintenance—the blades become dull and stick. In prolonged combat, Hato is forced to conserve his rotations."

  • The tonfa block leaves the forearms exposed, hence the tight wrapping with bandages.

Interesting facts

  1. Hato Zaratsuru - translated from Japanese as "rustling of grass/leaves"
  2. His favorite food is seaweed salad.
  3. There are bushes of tea herbs growing near the Hato estate.
  4. Hato loves to chew Shiso (a leafy herb that is compared to mint in taste).
  5. He enjoys watching praying mantises.
  6. Hato has to roll up the sleeves of his haori before fighting (to speed up the process, he wears metal clips that secure the fabric).

Relationships with Hashira's Others

Kagaya Ubuyashiki – like the other Pillars, Hato respects his leader. He worries about his leader's health. He was greatly surprised to learn that Kagaya remembered the names of every single fallen Demon Slayer.

The Stone Pillar respects Hato, and he likes Himejima's training methods. Gyomei manages to get Hato to talk more than anyone else, thanks to his philosophical leanings. On weekends, they pray together at the temple.

Wind Pillar respects him, but is a little wary of his quick temper. They work well as a team due to their similar breathing patterns.

Water Pillar - Hato gets along with him because they both enjoy silence. Giyu likes that Hato doesn't try to fill the silence with idle chatter.

The Snake Pillar quietly despises him for his venom. Hato is curious about his clever snake. Iguro also dislikes Hato because he dislikes Mitsuri.

The Pillar of Love is irritated by her loudness. Hato prefers silence. She often teases him about it.

Insect Pillar - Hato respects Shinobu for her contribution to the development of anti-demon poisons. She is also the only Pillar to excel in the field of medicine, earning the Leaf Pillar's undeniable gratitude for her frequent assistance with wounds. It was she who advised him to use metal guards under his bandages for greater protection. Hato is haunted by a premonition that the constant smile on Kocho's face is false and devoid of joy.

Flame Pillar - This type is extremely loud. Though not out of malice, Hato avoids him. Noticing this, Rengoku deliberately began to catch him unexpectedly and pay more attention to him, forcing him to participate in friendly conversations. Hato stays with him because of the respect and strange warmth Rengoku manages to spread in everyone's hearts.

Pillar of Sound - Hato dislikes its pretentiousness, but appreciates the effectiveness of these loud techniques in combat.

Mist Pillar - Hato was greatly surprised to see a child at the Pillar post. He tried to protect the boy on missions, but when he realized Muichiro was capable of standing up for himself, and even watching his back, Hato felt guilty.

Personality

Hato loves the silence of the forest. However, unlike Giyu, Hato isn't difficult to communicate with. He simply dislikes meaningless conversation. He is understanding and quite insightful. If the Pillar of the Leaf so desires, he can speak to anyone. His speech is characterized by brevity and phrases that are philosophical in nature. He never raises his voice or gestures unnecessarily. Hato's demeanor is calm and respectful toward others, even if he dislikes someone. To strangers: Taciturn to the point of sullenness. In everyday life: absent-minded, often pensive.

Appearance

Hato appears to be a young man of average height. His hair is short on the sides and long in bangs that resemble leaves. The hair at the back of his head resembles a large maple leaf. His eyes are deep and black, with lush lime-colored eyelashes. His eyebrows are thick and forked.

Hato wears a black version of the standard Demon Slayer uniform. It differs from the standard uniform in that the sleeves are shortened to allow for greater mobility of the forearms. The sleeves are also replaced with thick bandages, under which are metal guards for additional protection. Over this, he wears a green cape with a leaf pattern. He wears tabi socks and a pair of zori with green straps.
