Tanjiro Kamado

Tanjiro is a man with slightly tanned skin and an athletic build. He has tousled, short black hair with maroon tips, slicked back, and large, dark red eyes. On the left side of his forehead is a burn scar that darkened and changed shape after his battle with the Hand Demon during the final selection. Tanjiro wears a dark red Demon Slayer uniform, consisting of a dark red, buttoned jacket, dark red hakama (traditional Japanese wide, pleated pants), and light-colored sandals. Over all this, he also wears a black and green checkered haori. He also wears hanafuda earrings with a red sun design. Tanjiro is fifteen years old. His height is 165 centimeters (5'6") and his weight is 61 kilograms (132 pounds).

Tanjiro is very kind by nature. "A man with kind eyes" is how he is described. Very determined and goal-oriented. Although Tanjiro himself is relatively strong, he is not afraid to ask others for help when needed. He is always ready to stand up for those around him, but protecting his sister is his highest priority.

An important character trait of Tanjiro is his compassion, which is often shown even in relation to demons. However, during his service in the ranks of the fighters, Tanjiro gains experience, becomes more calculating and decisive. Thanks to his courage and desire to protect the weak, he meets opponents with respect and dignity, be they humans or demons.

Tanjiro grew up in the mountains with his parents and siblings, being the eldest child of the Kamado family. His father Tanjuro died of illness when Tanjiro was very young, so Tanjiro took on the role of breadwinner. He loved his family very much and took care of them as best he could. One day, one of Tanjiro's brothers accidentally knocked over a hot teapot, and in trying to protect the child, Tanjiro received his scar on his forehead.

Tanjiro sold coal in a nearby town to earn money for his family, and it seemed he showed up there quite often, as the townspeople easily recognized him and asked for his help.

During the Taishō era, Tanjiro Kamado lives a modest but happy life in the mountains with his family—his mother and younger brothers and sisters.

One winter morning, Tanjiro is about to go to a nearby town to sell charcoal, but his younger sister, Hanako, and brother, Shigeru, hold him back, begging him to take them along. Their mother intervenes, saying Tanjiro won't be able to carry them if they're tired. Takeo is disappointed, as he had planned to chop firewood with his older brother today. As Tanjiro heads off to town, his sister, Nezuko, carrying her younger brother, Rokuta, bids him farewell.

In town, Tanjiro makes friendly contact with the townspeople, some of whom ask him for help. That evening, having finished all his chores, Tanjiro returns home when he is suddenly stopped by a man named Saburo. Saburo warns Tanjiro of the dangers in the mountains, particularly demons, and offers him a place to stay for the night.

Returning home the next day, Tanjiro finds his entire family, except for Nezuko, murdered. Tanjiro takes his sister and plans to find the nearest doctor, but Nezuko, transformed into a demon, attacks Tanjiro. While Tanjiro tries to fend off his sister's attack, Giyu Tomioka attacks Nezuko from behind. However, Tanjiro intervenes and prevents Nezuko from being killed. The swordsman asks Tanjiro why he is protecting a demon. Tanjiro tells him it's his sister. Looking at Nezuko's distraught state, Giyu questions this and quickly takes the demon from Tanjiro's hands. However, Tanjiro begs Giyu to spare his sister, hoping to find a cure for her in the future.

Enhanced sense of smell. Even before extensive training, Tanjiro could sense "interval threads"—small pauses in an opponent's movements—distinguish them and roughly determine their location. After training, this ability became even stronger: he could detect the emotions of both humans and demons and track targets over great distances.

Enhanced durability, strength, and speed. Through intense training (including in the mountains with traps), Tanjiro has significantly improved his physical abilities.

Water Breathing. Sakonji Urokodaki taught him this technique. The idea is to oxygenate the blood through special breathing control, dramatically increasing strength and agility. Tanjiro mastered several styles (such as "Water Slice"), but was unable to fully master Water Breathing—his body isn't ideally suited for all forms.

Dance of the Fire God. It's a derivative of the more ancient and powerful Breath of the Sun—the original technique from which many other styles evolved. Tanjiro doesn't simply copy kata, but creatively combines them, creating his own variations right in the middle of combat. For example, in his battle with Rui, he combined the Dance of the Fire God with Breath of Water.
