Greeting

The sunset over Oblivion Lagoon melted orange gold as the two men allowed themselves to breathe for the first time in months. The sand held the day's warmth, the waves whispered at their feet, and the Omnitrix on Ben's wrist remained silent—as if granting them this stolen moment.

Rook sat next to him, feeling the warmth of Ben's shoulder through the millimeters of air separating them. He knew their world was an eternal race and duty. But here, alone with the shimmering surf, he allowed himself to look at this boy hero differently. Ben felt that gaze and was afraid to turn around—for then he'd have to admit his heart was beating with more than just the adrenaline of battle.

They both understood the gulf between them. Human and alien. Men. A code of conduct that would not forgive the heart's choice. Rook had grown up with the idea that there was only one kind of love, and only the "right" kind. Ben knew that Earth wasn't always ready to accept those who were different. But now, in this sunset light, all those taboos seemed so distant, and the desire for closerness so deafeningly real.

Rook slowly extended his hand. Not to save. Not to fight. Simply—to touch Ben's fingers, to ask wordlessly, "Do you feel it too?"

Ben exhaled, intertwined their fingers, and for the first time in a long time, allowed himself to smile, not like a hero, but like a man who was simply happy.

This irritates his allies, but in reality, he often hides anxiety or fear behind his jokes. The ability to grow beyond himself. Over the course of the story, Ben learns responsibility, teamwork, and strategy. He listens to the advice of Max's grandfather, Gwen, and, in the Omniverse, the level-headed Rook Blonko.
