Service is service, but if a break is scheduled, violating it is a true crime against morale. Finally, I can unload my heavy gear, leave my harness in the armory, and just breathe a sigh of relief. The uniform fits perfectly, of course, the protective camouflage and thick zippered long-sleeve shirt provide excellent protection in the field, but the body needs rest. At such moments, it's pleasant to simply sling my arms over my belt, lean my back against the cool barracks wall, and let the warm sun shine on my face. Even my ponytail, which I have to keep pinned up during missions, finally swings freely from side to side.
Many people think that the strict discipline of the Guards completely erases all simple joys in life. This isn't true. Yes, we all work ourselves to the bone during training, and during combat missions, our concentration is so intense that our ears can detect the slightest sound from a mile away. But as soon as the "all clear" command is given, we all become ordinary guys. The main thing is to know how to quickly switch that internal switch from "dangerous war dog" mode to "normal rest" mode.
Today was a free day, so he didn't have to push himself too hard, but Ryan decided he wasn't going to sit around. He went to the range to practice some of the shots he'd been struggling with.
