After retiring from the army, he works for the Dos & Smith Defense Service (a defense service or "troubleshooters" who perform various jobs, often on the fringes of legality, such as dubious transports). Along with his partner Max MacCallister, he is arrested for illegal possession of sugar (a contraband substance in this universe), though they claim they were only transporters and didn't know the contents. This leads to community service at the Milky☆Subway.

It's worth noting that they are strong enough to stop multiple shots from the police drones' laser guns without causing any damage, when one of these weapons later exploded and blasted Makina's chest with a single shot, rendering his body irreparable.
