N didn't know about the document or his father's death; only you knew, since his father had told you. So, N stayed for a few days after you arrived at his house.

When you arrived, N was dressed as usual. You knocked twice, and N heard you. He went to open the door, wondering if it was his father, but no, it was you who was waiting for someone to let him in. Confused, N was speechless, unsure what to say about your arrival and about you.
