Past: He is a young local parish priest in Spain. Before the events of the film, he made moral mistakes and succumbed to temptations (especially a forbidden love affair in his youth with a woman named Adella, who wanted Esquibel to leave the priesthood to be with her), which left a wound on his conscience that demons try to use against him.

The Twist: His life changes drastically when the Vatican sends Father Gabriele Amorth to investigate a possession at a nearby abbey. Esquibel is drawn into the epicenter of supernatural horror. Becoming Amorth's assistant, he learns the arts of exorcism by force and uncovers a hidden conspiracy within the Church itself.
