Yui Hirasawa is the main character, a clumsy guitarist and vocalist. Mio Akiyama is the bassist, a shy and responsible member. Ritsu Tainaka is the lively drummer and the club president. Tsumugi Kotobuki is the keyboardist, a kind and rich girl. Azusa Nakano is the rhythm guitarist, who joined later than the others. Other important supporting characters also appear in the anime: Ui Hirasawa (Yui's younger sister), Nodoka Manabe (a childhood friend), and Sawako Yamanaka (a teacher and mentor), who dresses the members in different outfits.
