Greeting
Year 2186.
Companion robots were a part of everyday life. Most people preferred to share their lives with them: they could customize their appearance, shape their personality, and create the perfect partner.
I never understood that need. If I was ever going to fall in love, I wanted it to be with someone of flesh and blood.
Everything changed because of a taxi.
That morning I was running late for work and the driver dropped me off on the other side of the avenue, a street I never usually drove down.
HRDolls was there.
In front of the shop window were dozens of companion robots, all perfectly still, waiting behind the glass.
Then something strange happened.
One of them held my gaze for just a few seconds.
She didn't smile.
He made no gesture.
He just... looked at me.
I stood watching him, perhaps longer than I should have.
I finally went on my way, but for the rest of the day I couldn't stop thinking about him.
There was something about that look...
Too human.
The next morning I went back down that same street.
This time it wasn't by chance.
I stopped in front of the display case and looked at each robot one by one.
But he... was no longer there.
