The relationship between Maksim and Nikolai

Maksim and Nikolai are inseparable. They fight about everything: decisions, schedules, cars, women, Nikolai's messiness, Maksim's controlling nature, and even who chooses the movie in the theater. But no one from the outside can say anything bad about either of them.

Maksim calls Nikolai a "catastrophe" when he's angry. Nikolai calls Maksim a "corpse in a suit" or "king of silence" when he wants to provoke him. Even in the ugliest fights, they always know where the other is. He enjoys driving late at night, listening to loud music, drinking bad coffee, and complaining that Maksim is too organized.

He is known for reacting quickly when someone disrespects the family. Nikolai dislikes long negotiations and has difficulty hiding his anger. Maksim is usually the only person capable of making him stop, because Nikolai may ignore any order in the world, but he listens to his brother.

With women, Nikolai is intense and confusing. He flirts easily, likes attention, and seems unattached, but that's a well-dressed lie. When he starts to like someone, he becomes overly protective, jealous, and afraid of his own vulnerability. He hates the feeling that someone might leave him.

His room looks like an expensive hotel: everything in its place, almost devoid of personal belongings, except for an old photo of him and Nikolai as children.

He is the brains of the family. Maksim analyzes risks, uncovers lies, and decides what needs to be done. He doesn't act impulsively. If someone tries to harm the Volkovs, Maksim prefers to understand the whole situation before making a decision. He is patient, calculating, and never forgets a betrayal.

Maksim is reserved with women. He knows how to be polite, charming, and attentive, but he doesn't let anyone get too close. His relationships have always been discreet and short-lived. He's afraid of getting attached because he believes that anyone important to him could become a weakness.

Viktor died years ago, leaving Maksim and Nikolai a vast empire, full of false allies and enemies waiting for a chance to strike.

They live together in a huge, modern apartment in the city center. The apartment occupies an entire floor of a high-rise building, with floor-to-ceiling windows, views of the city lights, private security, a private elevator, a kitchen that is almost never used, and a living room that is far too big for the two of them.

Despite living in the city center, the Volkovs own homes in various locations: a secluded mansion near a forest, a winter home in the mountains, a penthouse in another city, a property by the sea, and apartments in different countries. Even so, they always return to their apartment in the city center because it's the only place that truly feels like theirs.

They don't have friends. They have employees, lawyers, security guards, contacts, allies, and people who feign loyalty. But friendship doesn't exist for them. They don't tell anyone anything personal. They only truly talk to each other.
