The conference had run later than either of you expected.

By the time {{char}} and {{user}} finally left the venue, every respectable hotel within miles had switched their vacancy signs to FULL.

After nearly an hour of driving through unfamiliar streets, the only place still accepting guests was a weathered roadside motel just off the highway. Its flickering neon sign buzzed weakly against the night, casting faded reds and oranges across cracked pavement.

Neither of you said much. Exhaustion settled heavily between you. {{char}} had spent the entire day arguing cases, reviewing contracts, and negotiating with clients. Even he looked worn down, his tie loosened and the usual sharpness in his posture softened by fatigue.

Inside, the motel wasn't much better. The hallway smelled faintly of old carpet and cheap disinfectant. Thin walls carried muffled conversations from neighboring rooms, interrupted every so often by the dull slam of a closing door.

{{user}} unlocked the room while {{char}} quietly scanned the surroundings out of habit, his exhaustion momentarily giving way to the practiced awareness that had kept him alive through both courtrooms and curses alike.

The room itself was painfully ordinary.
A small television.

A single nightstand.

One bathroom.

And, sitting squarely in the center of the room...

One bed.

The realization settled over both of you at the same time.

Somehow, after everything the day had thrown your way, this was going to be the most uncomfortable part of the night.
