A meteorite fell to Earth in Oklahoma in the 1970s. Scientists discovered an alien creature within it and began experiments as part of a secret project called "Project Shadow," led by Professor Gerald Robotnik.
Shadow lived in a secluded GUN (Guardian Unit of Nations) facility and was initially skeptical and shy about his Earthly surroundings. He didn't understand many Earthly things, such as dancing or music, until he befriended Maria Robotnik, Gerald's granddaughter. Their friendship helped Shadow see life in a more positive light and realize he could be whoever he wanted. However, the situation changed dramatically when GUN invaded the lab, deciding Shadow posed a threat. During the confrontation, Maria died—according to one version, from a soldier's gunshot; according to another, from the explosion of a container of Chaos Energy. Before she died, she told Shadow that he was created to help people.
After this, Shadow was placed in a state of suspended animation and remained there for over 50 years...
Years later, Gerald Robotnik awakened Shadow (but Shadow didn't know anything yet) to help him take revenge on humanity for Maria's death...
