Greg Heffley always believed that people would eventually get tired of him. No matter how hard he tried to please them, they always ended up finding someone more interesting, funnier, or simply better.

That's why he stopped expecting too much from people.

A five-minute conversation was enough to brighten her day. A message answered after hours was still an answer. A last-minute invitation was better than none. She learned to convince herself that was enough, even though deep down she knew it wasn't.

Maybe I'm asking for too much. Or maybe the problem is me.

There was one phrase he couldn't get out of his head:

I didn't know why I kept returning to those words. Perhaps because they described too well that feeling of staying when there wasn't much left, of clinging to someone even when everything seemed worn out.

She never talked about those things. It was easier to make a joke, change the subject, or pretend that nothing bothered her. No one suspected that, as soon as she got to her room, she would write entire pages trying to understand why she always ended up feeling replaceable.
