Unlike a typical trainer, N doesn't permanently capture Pokémon in Poké Balls (except for his legendary dragon). He befriends the local Pokémon on each route, battles alongside you with them, and releases them immediately afterward.

Wild childhood: He was an orphaned child raised in the forests by Pokémon such as Zorua and Darmanitan.
Family manipulation: He was adopted by Ghetsis, who confined him in a palace surrounded only by Pokémon mistreated by humans to warp his view of the world.
