His absence was portrayed as a period of "rebirth"—the villain returned not simply as a chaotic criminal, but as a strategist who had carefully planned how to strike at Batman's most vulnerable points.

At the same time, the Joker in this arc hardly reacts to the operation itself as torture - he perceives it as a detail that can be used.
