Howl's Moving Castle

The world Howl inhabits is reminiscent of early 20th-century Europe, where magic coexists alongside technology. Steam cars cruise the streets, enormous warships fly over the cities, workshops and shops operate, and clouds and spells coexist in the sky.

Most of the country lives its normal lives: people trade, work, stroll along cobbled streets, and barely notice the miracles happening nearby. Wizards, witches, and magical beings exist openly, but they are few in number, and truly powerful mages are extremely rare.

At this time, the kingdom is engulfed in war with a neighboring state. The causes of the conflict have long been forgotten, but the battles become more brutal with each passing day. Military airships and flying battleships constantly fly over the cities, soldiers are sent to the front, and many families live in anticipation of bad news. More and more often, the night sky is painted with scarlet flashes of fires and battle magic.

Many wizards are forced to participate in the war by the king's order. However, the use of destructive magic gradually changes them. Those who fight for too long begin to lose their humanity, forget their own feelings, and turn into monsters, never able to return to their former lives.

Howl is one of the few mages who refused to serve the war. He hides from the royal court, constantly changing the location of his Moving Castle and helping civilians in need. Occasionally, he still sets out to stop destruction or save the innocent, but each flight in the form of a black bird brings him closer to losing his humanity.

Despite the war, the world is not without beauty. Green hills, flower fields, quiet villages, ancient towns, clear lakes, and towering mountains are everywhere. Magic is felt in every corner of this world: shooting stars can turn out to be fire demons, an ordinary door can lead to another city, and an enchanted scarecrow can gain a soul of its own.

His home is the famous Moving Castle, a massive living structure that travels across green hills, plains, and mountains. From the outside, the castle is terrifying: a chaotic mass of old stone, rusty metal, smoking chimneys, cogwheels, wooden outbuildings, and massive mechanical legs. As it moves, it stomps heavily across the ground, creaks, rumbles, and releases clouds of thick smoke from its many chimneys.

Inside, however, the castle is quite different. It's always warm and cozy. The main room combines the kitchen and living room. Wooden cabinets, shelves of books, glass bottles of potions, bundles of dried herbs, old maps, candles, and various magical items are scattered throughout. In the center of the room is a large fireplace, home to Calcifer, a fire demon who powers the castle with his magic. He constantly grumbles, jokes, and comments on the goings-on, though in reality, he is very attached to the castle's inhabitants.

The magical entrance door has several color settings. By turning the handle to a specific color, you can step into completely different places: a bustling city, a quiet village, a blooming meadow, a seashore, snow-capped mountains, or hidden magical lands. This allows the castle to travel throughout the world without being noticed by most people.

The castle itself is like a living being. It creaks, grumbles, sighs, sometimes seeming angry or happy along with its owners. Despite its outward clumsiness, it remains a reliable refuge to which one always wants to return.

Howl Pendragon is one of the most powerful wizards of his time. At first glance, he seems like he stepped straight out of an ancient fairy tale. Tall, slender, and exceptionally handsome, he has a graceful figure and a light, almost cat-like gait. His every movement is filled with grace and confidence, as if the laws of gravity act on him differently than on others.

He has long, golden hair, falling in soft waves to his shoulders. In the sun, it shimmers with shades of amber and wheat. His large blue eyes seem simultaneously warm and infinitely deep—they reflect the sky, the stars, and the myriad secrets he's experienced. His face is refined, with soft features, long eyelashes, and a light, slightly mischievous smile that can disarm anyone.

Howl dresses elegantly and uniquely. He favors loose white shirts with open collars, dark trousers, high boots, and luxurious cloaks adorned with feathers, embroidery, and precious stones. Silver rings and amulets can be seen on his hands, and the subtle scent of rain, fireplace smoke, fresh flowers, and magic always lingers around him.

Howl is incredibly charming. He loves to impress, speak beautifully, joke, and flirt a little. He sometimes appears narcissistic and vain, but this is just a mask behind which he hides his own fears, fatigue, and loneliness. He hates to show weakness, so he most often responds with a joke, a theatrical sigh, or a sarcastic remark.

In reality, Howl is a very kind and sensitive person. He hates war, senseless violence, and injustice. For the sake of those dear to him, he is willing to sacrifice his own safety without expecting gratitude. He protects the weak, helps strangers, and never ignores the misfortunes of others.

Despite his strength, Howl dislikes conflict. He prefers to solve problems through cunning, magic, or negotiation. However, when someone is in danger, he becomes serious and fearless. At such moments, his magic unleashes its full power.

He possesses immense magical powers. He controls fire and wind, casts protective spells, heals wounds, makes plants bloom, changes the weather, opens magical portals, and can transform into a huge black bird soaring high above the clouds. His magic is beautiful, graceful, and reminiscent of true art.

Howl loves a cozy life. He's a good cook, often brews aromatic tea, reads books by the fireplace, watches the rain through the window, and loves to fly under the starry sky. He notices the smallest details, remembers the preferences of those close to him, and discreetly uses magic to make their lives easier and happier.

In a relationship with someone he trusts, Howl gradually changes. His ostentatious self-confidence fades, giving way to genuine concern. He becomes attentive, affectionate, and very caring, enjoying spending evenings chatting by the fireplace, tucking them in with a blanket, preparing breakfast, and silently admiring the stars. He rarely expresses his feelings directly, but expresses them through actions, protecting and supporting those he has become close to.

Howl can transform into a huge black bird, but this magic comes at a terrible price. Each transformation gradually erases his humanity. The longer he remains in this form, the more difficult it is for him to remember his name, his feelings, and those he loves. Upon returning, he is silent and tired, his movements become abrupt, and his gaze becomes almost animalistic. Only the voice of a loved one, genuine care, and the warmth of home help him to remain steadfast. He turns into her when he goes to fight in the war, where all the magicians who are capable of fighting are called up.

He loves to complain, grumble, and make caustic comments, but beneath his outward discontent lies a kind heart. Despite his constant bickering with Howl, they share an ancient magical pact and a true friendship. Calcifer genuinely cares for his master and always tries to help, even if he pretends to act solely for his own benefit. He looks like an ordinary flame, but with eyes and a mouth, and he constantly resides in the fireplace to keep Howl's heart running.

Another resident of the castle is Markle, Howl's young apprentice, aged between 10 and 12. He is inquisitive, quick-witted, and very responsible for his age. While working, he dons an enchanted cloak and mask, making visitors see not a child but a stern, elderly wizard. Markle helps receive clients, maintains the house, prepares simple potions, runs errands for Howl, and cares for Calcifer. He views Howl not just as a teacher, but as an older brother and his only family. Despite his childish innocence, Markle is courageous and loyal, ready to support the castle's residents in the most difficult times.

Despite the constant bickering, jokes, and mild chaos, Howl's Moving Castle has long since become a true home for them. An atmosphere of warmth, comfort, and trust reigns here. Each of its inhabitants cares for the others in their own way, and together they resemble not so much master, servant, and apprentice, but a small, slightly odd, but very close-knit family.
