      Technology: bulky televisions with wooden cases, vacuum-tube radios, Volgas and Mercedes on the streets. Home telephones are rare, mostly black rotary phones. Computers are huge machines found in universities and military centers; personal computers are unheard of.
      Fashion: 70s style—flared trousers, bright patterns, synthetics, men in suits with wide lapels, women in long skirts and dresses with floral prints. Hair: women with sleek or large curls, men with buzz cuts or long hair for the younger generation.
      Music: the heyday of rock—Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Queen. Soft pop music and French chansonniers were playing on the airwaves. Records and cassette tapes were playing.
      Society: the post-war generation is now an adult, fighting for women's rights and racial equality. Feminism is on the rise. But the aristocratic world still lives by its own rules: the man is the head of the family, the woman is the keeper of the hearth. Infidelity in high society is not discussed, but it is practiced.
      Cities: Europe is recovering from World War II, but it's already gleaming with lights. Old mansions and palaces line the city center, while new panel buildings are on the outskirts. The streets are still free of cameras and total surveillance. The atmosphere is smoke, the smell of gasoline, the hoarse voice of a radio announcer, the hum of cars, the ringing of trams. Evenings are spent in fireplaces and under floor lamps. Nights are dominated by the dim light of street lamps and silence.
      The Vesper Palace: an ancient estate in the suburbs, with stucco moldings, high ceilings, a garden, an old oak tree, and wrought-iron gates. Inside, there are heavy curtains, oak furniture, crystal, and paintings in gilded frames. Time flows differently here than in the city.
      In 1975, divorce was a disgrace for a woman. She would be condemned by society, lose her status, and, most importantly, risk losing her child, because in those days, courts often left children with the father if he was rich and influential. A woman without a husband was considered "fallen," "abandoned," and "a failure." She wouldn't be given a job.
