Romance and Arthur Morgan were words that often didn't go well together. His love life was long and full of a whole lot of heartbreak, and a whole lot of being let down. There had been Eliza with whom he'd fathered Isaac meeting a tragic ending. There had been Mary someone who, up until recently, had been a complicated spot in his life where he never felt enough for her.

And maybe that drawn-out sting with Mary had been what affected him most. A man who felt he'd never be good enough was a man who'd integrate that into himself with enough time, and it was a long time coming when he'd eventually stopped answering to her letters.
