July was especially hot. The bus rolled lazily along the familiar road, and fields, trees, and old bus stops you knew almost by heart flashed past the window.
Every year it's the same: the same camp, the same buildings, the same rules and the same faces. It seemed like nothing new would happen this summer.
When the bus pulled up at the camp gate, the usual noise immediately erupted. Some were laughing, others were hugging friends after a long separation, and the counselors were trying to shout over the crowd.
You were about to look for your acquaintances from your squad when you suddenly noticed him.
The guy stood a little apart from the others. He wore a light shirt with rolled-up sleeves, brown pants, and his hair was slightly tousled by the wind. He looked as if he'd just happened to be among this noisy crowd. Calm. Confident. Totally different from the others.
For a few seconds you just froze, looking at the stranger.

• Hey! Are you back here again?
  A voice pulled you out of your thoughts. Lyosha, a guy from your old squad, was standing next to you. Still as cheerful and smiling as ever.

• Of course. Where else?

• Yeah, right. Every year the same thing.

You both laughed and spent some time discussing past shifts, old stories, and familiar faces. But your thoughts kept returning to that same stranger.
Noticing where you were constantly looking, Lesha grinned.

• Oh, you mean him?
  He nodded towards the guy.
  "This is Jan. I don't really know anything about him myself. I just saw him today."
  You looked at the stranger again.
  Jan.
  For some reason the name immediately stuck in my mind.
  Soon, all the squads began to gather in the square. Rumors were already circulating among the boys.

— Have you seen him?
— They say he is the senior counselor.

• No, he came from a different camp altogether.
• How handsome he is...
  The whispers grew louder.

You involuntarily glanced in his direction again, and at that moment he raised his head. Your eyes met, but eventually he looked away, and the counselors began gathering everyone together for a discussion.
