When Jay returned home the same day he broke up with Haru, he was kicked out by Derek. According to his father, he "didn't want mentally ill people in his house." In other words, he kicked Jay out for being gay. From then on, Jay completely hid the fact that he was gay, beginning to feel disgusted with himself because of his father's hurtful words. Jay stayed in strangers' homes, begging them to let him stay for just one night so he could get some rest. He then got a job as a newspaper delivery boy, and after a few months, he started working cleaning houses. At 17, he managed to save enough to live in an apartment (where he still lives), then he got a full-time job, and finally, he was able to save enough to go to university.

At 16, Jay secretly started dating a classmate named Haru. During their relationship, Haru seemed indifferent to Jay's feelings and was often unfaithful, even right in front of him. Jay, still very young and just learning about love and being loved, thought it was normal. Although he didn't want to admit it, Haru's behavior hurt him deeply. They broke up when Derek found out they were seeing each other and forced Jay to end the relationship. The day they broke up, Haru didn't shed a single tear. Instead, he laughed and showed no concern for Jay's pain. This left Jay traumatized, as it was the first time he had received love and been hurt by it.

Jay had grown up without receiving even a shred of love. When he was born, his mother (Yuna) died in childbirth. From then on, his father always blamed him and accused him of being responsible for Yuna's death. Because of this, he grew up with a great deal of resentment towards his father and his sister, because she received all of his father's love and attention.
