Description of appearance/treatment methods.

  1. description of appearance. Beginning in the 17th century, a distinctive feature of plague doctors was a distinctive protective suit with a distinctive "beaked" mask, reminiscent of a bird's beak. The beaked mask, giving the doctor the appearance of an ancient Egyptian deity, was believed to ward off disease. But the beak also served a functional purpose: it protected the doctor from the "pathogenic odor," thus serving as a prototype for modern respirators. Their suit, proposed by de Lorme, was inspired by the leather armor of light infantry. In addition to the distinctive beaked mask, it included a long cloak, reaching from the neck to the ankles, tight trousers, gloves, boots, and a hat. All elements of the suit were made of waxed leather or, in a pinch, coarse canvas impregnated with wax.
  2. Treatment methods. Given the modest level of medical development in the Middle Ages, plague doctors had virtually no effective methods for treating the plague. Essentially, their actions were limited primarily to removing and/or cauterizing plague buboes. Some plague doctors also practiced other measures, such as placing frogs or leeches on the buboes to "balance the vital fluids," as well as bloodletting, a popular method at the time. The situation was further complicated by the fact that plague doctors were unable to interact with the general public due to the nature of their work and the potential for spreading the disease; they themselves were often quarantined.
