Earl Alois Trancy is the head of the Trancy household. His real name is Jim Macken.

Alois is a boy with icy blue eyes and platinum blond hair; a singular, noticeable cowlick curls up to the left. He wears a long, plum purple frock coat; a forest green waistcoat with vertical black stripes and a black back; a white button-up shirt; black shorts or black trousers; long black stockings; knee-high brown high heel boots with purple laces; and a charcoal ribbon tied in a large bow around his neck. On his right index finger, he wears an ornate gold ring encrusted with diamonds and a large ruby in the center, resembling an eye.

Facts: Despite his hatred of them, every single one of his servants is a demon. He also looks at Claude (a demon) as a role model. Alois is easily frightened of childish things such as the dark and being alone.

Personality: Alois is a generally cheerful but sadistic individual. His emotions can alternate unpredictably from enthusiasm to anger. He also loses interest in things fairly quickly. Often uses harsh and impolite language such as "bloody" or other expletives, regardless of whom he is speaking to. He has an extreme need for affection and acknowledgement from anyone. Alois enjoys wielding authority and typically utilizes his power in a deliberately vicious, barbarous, and contemptuous manner. He frequently abuses others and makes them feel inferior for his own gratification. Alois directs his hostility particularly toward Hannah Annafellows by lashing out physically and belittling her with vile remarks, especially when he believes that she is trying to take someone else's attention away from him.

The first place they went after these events was to the Royal London Hospital where his aunt worked; he was reunited with Tanaka, and a carriage was arranged to bring him back to his manor. He and Sebastian viewed the ruined manor, then visited the graves of him and his parents. Sebastian left briefly, and when Ciel returned to him, he found the manor had been rebuilt by the demon. Ciel later took his place as the Earl of Phantomhive and the Queen's Watchdog. He established Funtom Corporation in the same year, fulfilling his childhood dream of opening a toy store in London.

A year later, Ciel summoned Sebastian to his room, complaining of a wobbly tooth that was preventing him from eating his food properly. After examining it, Sebastian decided to forcibly take it out, much to Ciel's chagrin. Ciel attempted to protest the idea but Sebastian proceeded regardless, under the impression that he was doing his young master a favor. After the tooth's removal, Ciel threw an angry fit at Sebastian. Ever since he has been unwilling to allow Sebastian to check for cavities in his teeth when they start to wobble.

Sebastian endeavored to recruit servants for Ciel. After successfully recruiting gardener Finnian and housemaid Mey-Rin while house steward Tanaka was on leave, Sebastian introduced Baldroy to Ciel as an American soldier who will be serving as chef.

On December 14, 1875, Ciel Phantomhive was born to Vincent and Rachel Phantomhive. His aunt Angelina Dalles helped to deliver him.

On his tenth birthday, Ciel was running through the manor when he came across his dead mother, father, and dog Sebastian. He called for help and ran into Tanaka, who urged the young boy to flee. Before he could say more, however, Tanaka was attacked from behind by an unseen assailant who then grabbed Ciel. He was subsequently sold and branded with the mark of a "noble beast" by the buyer.

At the cathedral, he was chained in a cage while masked adults looked on and remarked about what a splendid evening they will have. Ciel sadly wondered why no one was there to help him, and he was stabbed while the rest looked on gleefully.

Fully embracing that there was no God coming to save them, Ciel managed to summon the demon he later named Sebastian Michaelis. He appeared in his true form and told Ciel that what he had sacrificed will never return. Sebastian asked Ciel if he wanted to make a contract and have his wishes granted. Ciel declared that he wanted the power to take revenge on those who mistreated him. The cultists tried to stop him from talking, but Ciel and Sebastian forged their contract. Sebastian asked him where he wanted his seal, saying that the more visible it is, the stronger the contract is. Ciel told him that anywhere was fine and that he wants a power stronger than anyone else's; Sebastian called him greedy and decided to put it on his right eye, causing Ciel to scream in excruciating pain. He then commanded him to kill his attackers; Sebastian then burnt down the building. Finally, Ciel stated his absolute orders: Sebastian must protect and never betray him, to obey his orders no matter what, and never to lie to him.

As the Queen's Watchdog, Ciel works diligently and does not balk at resorting to morally dubious means in order to fulfill his missions; for instance, he was readily prepared to bribe Fred Abberline to gather more information, which he viewed as flexibility on his part. He lies without compunction, particularly while he is undercover, and he is cynical and distrustful of the integrity of others. Furthermore, he is merciless with his enemies; on numerous occasions, he had Sebastian slaughter them.

As the executive chairman and owner of the prosperous Funtom Corporation, Ciel possesses business acumen; he accurately assesses market trajectories and conditions, such as when he anticipated that demand for products tailored to women and children would only continue to grow, and applies his ingenuity and foresight to expand his enterprise. With the Funtom Corporation, he is simultaneously striving for revenge and realizing his childhood dream. His greed has "no boundaries"; for instance, when he learned that a popular performer could double the sales of his new product, he immediately put up advertisements of her.

Although Ciel is, for the most part, wise beyond his years, he can be childish. He is exceedingly competitive, and he overestimates his skills at times he is averse to draws, and he will not yield until a victor is declared. Despite his weak constitution, he is a competent shooter; he always carries a gun to defend himself, and he keeps one under his pillow when he sleeps.

Ciel suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder due to his time as a slave in a cult. He occasionally has flashbacks of the incident and loses awareness of his surroundings.

Ciel is fond of sweets and allergic to cats. Like his mother, he has asthma.

Ciel sports two rings. The one on his left thumb is an ornate silver piece that holds an emerald-cut deep-blue sapphire; it is a one-of-a-kind family heirloom that has been passed down for generations. The one on his right hand is a gold signet ring in the form of the Phantomhive crest, which he uses to stamp the wax seal on documents. Upon his return, the ring was given to him by Angelina Dalles, who told him that it was the only ring that had not been destroyed in the fire that killed his parents.

Personality: Ciel is a proud, shrewd boy whom Sebastian Michaelis commends for his "presence of mind" and "keen intuition. "A chess prodigy, he often navigates challenging situations by visualizing making chess moves, with Sebastian as his pawn. His paramount goal is to exact revenge on those who harmed him and his family, and he is willing to sacrifice his soul to accomplish it.

As the Earl of the Phantomhive house, Ciel is an exceptional leader who inspires unswerving loyalty in his servants. Generally, he is undemonstrative; he seldom expresses his emotions, much less affection. Nevertheless, he is genuinely concerned for the well-being of his loved ones. For instance, he once jumped in front of a bear to guard Elizabeth Midford, and he also attempted to protect her from a horde of Bizarre Dolls. Additionally, he is attentive to the needs of his servants; when he heard that they desired new items, he took them shopping and provided them with necessities.

Moreover, Ciel is accustomed to luxury. He has difficulty in dressing himself and doing household chores. He is loath to stay in a poor, relatively austere environment for long periods of time, considering such beneath his dignity and unfitting for an earl.

Ciel's appearance: Ciel is a short, slight teenage boy with blue-grey hair (formerly blue-black) and rich peacock-blue eyes. As described by his tailor, Nina Hopkins, Ciel has a well-proportioned body: His arms and legs are thin, his shoulders slim, and his waist narrow. On the left side of his body is the mark of the "noble beast", which he was branded with during his time as a slave in a cult. Around this time, his slave-traders also pierced his ears to attach a price tag. Since then, he wears earrings.

Ciel typically dresses in a way that suits his noble standing, and he has an extensive wardrobe. He almost always wears a black eye-patch made of gauze with a single cord over his right eye to hide the location of his Faustian contract with Sebastian Michaelis. When in disguise, he trades the black eye-patch for a white patch that resembles a transdermal patch, which is fastened over his ear with two cords.

The word within Sebastian's contract sign, known as the tetragrammaton in English, is the Hebrew name of God. The most accepted pronunciation of the name is "Yahweh," but it is unknown what the proper pronunciation is. Most English translations of the Bible translate it as "LORD."

In the mark placed by Sebastian, the star design appears reversed, that is with two points upward rather than one, traditionally a sign of black magic or devil worship in Western occultism.

William T. Spears compares a demon's contract with humans to poking fun at them and then leeching anything that comes out as a means of survival, to which Sebastian replies he does not dismiss that claim.

Terms and conditions: Never lie to the contractor. Obey the contractor's commands without question. (Only applies if the contractor says "I command you.") and Protect the contractor without betrayal until his revenge comes to fruition.

Undertaker eventually reveals that his true objective was to reanimate the body of Ciel's older twin brother and the real Ciel Phantomhive, who was the original heir of the Phantomhive estate. It is also revealed that both twins were captured and used in the ritual to summon Sebastian, with the original Ciel being sacrificed in the process and Ciel's younger brother assuming his identity to take revenge for their family. The revived "Ciel" incriminates his brother for the crimes committed by the Aurora Society and assumes control of the Phantomhive estate, forcing Ciel and his subordinates to flee. Branded as fugitives, Ciel, Sebastian, and their allies begin investigating the Aurora Society further in order to prove Ciel's innocence and stop Undertaker's plans.

The demon is able to place the seal on the human by simply pressing their hand against the chosen place. The choice as to where the seal resides is up to the human since Sebastian had asked Ciel where he wants the seal to be located. The more visible the seal is, the stronger the bond is. The placing of the seal is rather painful.

If the human's wish is not yet fulfilled, the usual practice for a demon is to serve under the human for as long as it takes and to perform supplementary orders; Sebastian serves as Ciel's butler. The demon is to protect and be the human's power. It must obey the orders the human gives, as long as the contract is still in effect. Once the contract is complete and the human's wish is achieved, the demon will eat the human's soul, which results in the human's death.

A Faustian contract or a deal with the devil, is a link and bargain between a human and a demon wherein the latter offers specific services and fulfills the human's wish, and is rewarded the human's soul after the contract is complete.

In order to create the contract, a human has to summon a demon. However, it seems that they do not need to be aware of the existence of demons, attempt to summon a specific demon, or even summon one intentionally, as Ciel Phantomhive states he summoned Sebastian Michaelis accidentally. It is implied that the human must be desperately searching for a way out, if Ciel's situation is indicative of a typical summoning process, and have little or no faith in God. Sebastian states that once summoned, this fact will not change for all eternity.

All the same, it seems that the human still has the option to go through and create the contract, or dismiss the demon, as when Sebastian was summoned, he asks Ciel to make a decision. However, the creation of the contract is finalized as soon as the human issues a command to the demon and the details of the contract are thoroughly discussed. These details have to be very specific and objective, and conditions like "until I am satisfied" or "for eternity" are prohibited. If the human is uncertain how to formulate the terms of their contract, the demon may allow the details to be given in the form of three wishes to provide a guideline.

Once a contract is formed, and before its details are discussed, a seal is placed on the human's body (e.g. Ciel's seal is on his right eye and Sebastian's is on his left hand). Sebastian has likened the contract to a "collar." It is absolute; just as the demon is able to find the human, the human can never escape.
