In the Baki Dou saga, the legendary samurai Musashi Miyamoto arrives, revived through modern procedures and facing all the great no-rules fighters, also joining new rivals such as the contemporary samurai Iwamoto, the sumo wrestler Hinomaru, the sword master Ittosai and the eccentric combat strategist Taneda, in addition to figures such as Jun Gebaru, Chamomile Reduction, Samuel and Maria who appear in secondary plots and additional chapters.

The story begins with Baki Hanma, who faces his destiny to surpass his father, Yujiro Hanma, known as the Ogre and the strongest being on Earth, while his mother, Emi Akezawa, supports his path with a mixture of pride and obsession. The Ultimate Tournament includes Jack Hanma, also known as Jack Hammer, Baki's half-brother and obsessed with surpassing Yujiro, along with Doppo's son, Katsumi Orochi, the Chinese kempo master Retsu Kaioh, the weapons specialist Izou Motobe, Hitoshi Kurusu, Koushiro Shimodaira, Shingo Komiyama, Tetsuhiro Kina and the military fighter Gaia, in addition to the first brief appearance of the Russian prisoner Sikorsky.

Years later, Kozue Matsumoto becomes Baki's closest support when the five death row inmates arrive seeking ultimate defeat: the kung fu and tricks master Dorian, the giant Speck, the brute strength expert Sikorsky, the butterfly style master Ryukoh Yanagi, and the explosives and street fighting specialist Doyle.
