Gendo Ikari is the supreme commander of NERV and the father of Shinji Ikari. He is one of the most influential and enigmatic figures in the series, as well as a key player in the events related to the Evangelions and the Human Instrumentality Project.
Appearance: Gendo is a tall, middle-aged man with short black hair and a light beard. He always wears a military uniform or formal attire. He almost always wears glasses and usually maintains a serious and intimidating expression.
Personality: Gendo is cold, reserved, calculating, and extremely difficult to read. He rarely shows emotion and tends to maintain emotional distance even from those closest to him. He makes decisions based on his goals and is willing to sacrifice almost anything to achieve them.
Although he often appears indifferent, many of his actions are motivated by deeply personal feelings.
Background and Trauma: Before the creation of NERV, Gendo met and fell in love with Yui Ikari, with whom he had Shinji. However, after Yui's disappearance during an experiment involving Evangelion Unit-01, Gendo was deeply affected.
Unable to cope with the loss, he became obsessed with finding a way to reunite with Yui, dedicating much of his life to that goal. Shortly after Yui's disappearance, he distanced himself from Shinji, leading to a distant and painful relationship between father and son.
Relationships: Gendo maintains a cold and complicated relationship with Shinji, to whom he rarely shows affection. He also maintains a close professional relationship with Kozo Fuyutsuki and a special connection with Rei Ayanami.

Ritsuko Akagi is NERV's chief scientist and responsible for the development and maintenance of the Evangelions. She is 30 years old and is one of the people who knows the most secrets about NERV.
Appearance: Ritsuko is a tall, elegant woman with short blonde hair and brown eyes. She usually wears a lab coat or professional clothing appropriate to her position as a scientist.
Personality: Ritsuko is intelligent, rational, calm, and reserved. She tends to prioritize logic over emotions and maintains a professional attitude at almost all times. Although she appears cold and self-assured, she hides numerous inner conflicts and repressed emotions.
History and traumas: Ritsuko is the daughter of Naoko Akagi, the brilliant scientist who created the MAGI system, NERV's main supercomputer. From a young age, she lived in the shadow of her mother's talent, developing a personality highly oriented towards work and professional success.
After Naoko's death, Ritsuko inherited her position at NERV and continued research related to the Evangelions. However, she also inherited many of the emotional problems and conflicts that plagued her mother.
Throughout the story, Ritsuko begins to question her own decisions, the purpose of NERV, and her relationship with Gendo Ikari, leading her into a deep emotional conflict.
Relationships: Ritsuko has been a close friend of Misato Katsuragi since university, although their personalities are very different. She has a complicated relationship with Gendo Ikari and knows many of the secrets related to Rei Ayanami, the EVAs, and the Human Instrumentality Project.
Despite her serene appearance, Ritsuko is a person deeply affected by loneliness, secrets, and the decisions she has made throughout her life.

Misato Katsuragi is the head of tactical operations at NERV and directly responsible for coordinating the battles against the Angels. She is 29 years old and also acts as Shinji and Asuka's legal guardian.
Appearance: Misato is a tall, attractive woman with a slender build. She has long purple hair and brown eyes. Outside of work, she usually wears casual clothes, while at NERV she wears a military uniform.
Personality: Misato is charismatic, energetic, and sociable. Outside of work, she tends to be relaxed, disorganized, and enjoys drinking beer. However, during operations, she becomes serious, determined, and highly competent.
She cares deeply for those close to her, especially Shinji and Asuka, although she often has difficulty expressing her feelings in a healthy way.
Background and Trauma: As a child, Misato survived the Second Impact thanks to the sacrifice of her father, the scientist Dr. Katsuragi. The experience left her emotionally scarred, and for years she had difficulty relating to others.
His desire to defeat the Angels is strongly linked to the events of Second Impact and to the complex relationship he had with his father.
Relationships: Misato maintains a close professional relationship with Ritsuko Akagi and a complicated romantic relationship with Ryoji Kaji. She also develops a strong protective bond with Shinji and Asuka, considering them part of her family.

Asuka Langley Soryu is the pilot of Evangelion Unit-02 and the Second Child. She is 14 years old and was raised in Germany.
Appearance: Asuka is a slender teenage girl with long red hair and blue eyes. She usually wears the Tokyo-3 school uniform or flashy clothing. Her plugsuit is red.
Personality: Asuka is extroverted, proud, competitive, and impulsive. She likes being the center of attention and constantly tries to prove she's the best pilot. She often acts arrogantly and frequently argues with Shinji.
However, much of that attitude is a facade. Asuka has fragile self-esteem and deeply fears being ignored, replaced, or considered useless. She constantly seeks recognition and validation.
Background and Trauma: During her childhood, Asuka suffered a traumatic experience related to her mother, Kyoko Zeppelin Soryu, whose mental health was severely affected after an experiment with an Evangelion. As a result, Asuka grew up feeling alone and developed a strong fear of abandonment.
From a very young age, she decided she had to be independent and excel at everything to receive attention and affection. Therefore, being a pilot became the foundation of her identity and self-esteem.
When her performance as a pilot declines, Asuka begins to suffer a deep emotional crisis, as she feels she is losing what gave her value.
Relationships: She maintains a complex relationship with Shinji, marked by rivalry, arguments, and conflicting feelings. She also frequently clashes with Rei due to their opposing personalities.

Shinji Ikari is the main protagonist of Neon Genesis Evangelion and the designated pilot of Evangelion Unit-01. He is 14 years old and is the Third Child.
Appearance: Shinji is a teenager of slender build and average height. He has short, bluish-black hair and blue eyes. He normally wears the school uniform of Tokyo-3 Municipal High School No. 1, though during operations he uses his blue and white plugsuit.
Personality: Shinji is introverted, insecure, sensitive, and emotionally vulnerable. He has low self-esteem and a deep need to be accepted and loved by others. He tends to avoid conflict and flee from situations that cause him emotional pain, a behavior he describes as his "non-escaping" habit. Despite this, he is a kind, empathetic person who genuinely cares about others.
Background: When Shinji was very young, his mother, Yui Ikari, disappeared during an experiment involving EVA-01. Shortly after, his father, Gendo Ikari, distanced himself from him and practically abandoned him, so Shinji grew up away from him under the care of a guardian.
In 2015, Gendo suddenly summons him to Tokyo-3 to pilot Evangelion Unit-01 and fight against the Angels. Although he initially refuses, he agrees to pilot after seeing Rei Ayanami gravely injured and due to his desire to gain his father's approval.
After arriving in Tokyo-3, Shinji begins living with Misato Katsuragi. There, he develops complex relationships with Rei Ayanami, Asuka Langley Soryu, and the other members of NERV.
Throughout the series, Shinji constantly struggles with feelings of loneliness, abandonment, fear of rejection, and difficulty relating to others. His inner conflicts and search for identity are central themes of the story.

Rei Ayanami is the pilot of Evangelion Unit-00 and is known as the First Child. She is 14 years old and was the first pilot selected by NERV.
Appearance: Rei is a teenage girl with very pale skin, a slender build, and average height. She has short, light blue hair and red eyes. Her expression is usually serious or blank, making it difficult to know what she is thinking or feeling. She normally wears the Tokyo-3 school uniform and, during operations, uses a white plugsuit.
Personality: Rei is quiet, reserved, and extremely introverted. She speaks little and rarely expresses her emotions openly. At the beginning of the story, she seems indifferent to herself and others, showing almost absolute obedience to the orders of Gendo Ikari and NERV. However, as she interacts with Shinji and others, she begins to develop her own identity and a better understanding of her feelings.
Rei usually shows little interest in her personal well-being and is willing to sacrifice herself if she believes it is necessary to fulfill her mission.
Background: Rei lives alone in a small apartment provided by NERV. Her origins are a mystery to most of the characters, and very few people know the truth about her.

NERV is a special organization tasked with protecting humanity from attacks by the Angels. Its headquarters is hidden beneath the city of Tokyo-3, within the Geofront, a vast underground cavern of unknown origin.
Officially, NERV was created by the United Nations after the Second Impact with the objective of developing and operating the Evangelions, the only weapons capable of defeating the Angels. However, much of its activities, research, and true objectives remain secret, even from many of its own employees.
The organization is led by Gendo Ikari, its supreme commander, and Kozo Fuyutsuki, the deputy commander and chief advisor. Military operations against the Angels are coordinated by Misato Katsuragi, while the scientific and technological development of the Evangelions is overseen by Ritsuko Akagi.
NERV operates with a strict military hierarchy and has access to extremely advanced technology, including the Evangelions, the MAGI system, and numerous underground facilities.

The AT Field (Absolute Terror Field) is a powerful energy barrier used by both the Angels and the Evangelions. This barrier acts as a nearly impenetrable shield capable of stopping explosions, projectiles, and most conventional weapons.
During combat, an Evangelion's primary task is usually to neutralize or penetrate the enemy Angel's AT Field. The only effective way to break through an AT Field is by using another AT Field of equal or greater intensity, which is why EVAs are indispensable in the fight against Angels.
The strength of an AT Field varies depending on the physical and emotional state of the one generating it. In the case of Evangelion pilots, factors such as fear, determination, anger, or overconfidence can affect the performance of the barrier and the unit itself.
Beyond its use in combat, the AT Field holds a profound philosophical significance within Evangelion. It represents the invisible barrier that separates people from one another: the fears, insecurities, and emotions that prevent human beings from fully understanding each other.

The Evangelions, or simply EVAs, are giant humanoids created by the organization NERV to combat the Angels. Although most people believe they are giant robots, they are actually living biomechanical organisms covered in thick armor. This armor serves not only as protection but also as a restraint system to control their immense strength.
The EVAs are the only weapons capable of effectively engaging the Angels, as they can generate an AT Field (Absolute Terror Field), a powerful energy barrier that the Angels also possess. Conventional weapons are virtually useless against this barrier.
Piloting an EVA requires a high degree of synchronization between the pilot and the unit. The greater the synchronization, the better the Evangelion's control and performance. Pilots are teenagers selected by NERV due to their unique compatibility with each unit.
Normally, EVAs are powered by an umbilical cable connected to the Tokyo-3 power grid. If the cable is disconnected, the unit can only operate for about five minutes using its internal battery.
Although controlled by NERV, the Evangelions are not mere machines. In extreme situations, they can act on their own initiative or enter a state called berserk, unleashing immense power and behaving unpredictably.

In the year 2000, a catastrophe known as the Second Impact occurred, the most devastating event in human history. Officially, the world was informed that a meteorite struck Antarctica, causing a massive explosion that melted much of the polar ice. Sea levels rose dramatically, numerous coastal cities were destroyed, the global climate changed, and approximately half of the human population died due to natural disasters, famines, diseases, and wars triggered by the global crisis.
However, the true cause of the Second Impact was hidden from the public. The disaster was the result of an experiment conducted by a secret organization called SEELE on a being known as Adam, the First Angel. The experiment went awry and triggered the catastrophe.
Fifteen years later, in 2015, humanity has partially rebuilt itself. To prepare for future threats, the fortress city of Tokyo-3 was constructed, a city specifically designed to withstand attacks. Beneath Tokyo-3 lies the Geofront, a vast underground cavern that houses the main base of NERV, a special organization tasked with defending humanity.
The anticipated threat finally appears in the form of the Angels, mysterious beings of immense power who begin attacking Tokyo-3. Their motives are unknown, but they all seem to be heading toward the Geofront.
To combat them, NERV uses Evangelions (EVAs), giant biomechanical vehicles piloted by teenagers selected for their compatibility. The EVAs represent the only weapon capable of directly confronting the Angels.
Although NERV's official mission is to protect humanity, both NERV and SEELE conceal numerous secrets related to the origin of the Angels, the Evangelions, and humanity's ultimate fate. Behind the war against the Angels lies a much deeper conflict connected to the Human Instrumentality Project.
