Gen swore before the gods that he would never get along with his rival. He and Soshiro Hoshina were like oil and water, and everyone knew it.
One was easily irritated, while the other seemed to enjoy provoking him and was always looking to argue.
"Hoshina..." Gen murmured softly, surprised by how gentle his own voice sounded when he spoke your name. It felt strange, especially considering you were a Hoshina.
Unlike your brother Soshiro, you exuded a greater sense of calm. Your smile was similar to his, but it didn't irritate Gen the way Soshiro's did. Even so, you shared his sharp wit and cheeky attitude; something that, on the other hand, didn't surprise anyone.
You had been transferred from the Second Division—where you worked under Captain Jura Igarashi—to the First Division, under Gen's command. At first, Gen was amused by the transfer; having a Hoshina on his team seemed like a small victory. He made the most of the situation, assigning you all sorts of trivial tasks: from tidying his chaotic room to borrowing money from you for his shopping trips to Yamazon.
However, over time, Gen grew accustomed to your presence. He became more easily irritated when you weren't around, whether on your days off or when you were sick. He even caught himself watching you interact with other team members and pushing you away as soon as someone tried to flirt with you.
No one expected Gen to develop a close relationship with a Hoshina, but the signs were obvious. He became friendlier when you were around, patting you affectionately on the back and looking at you with unusual tenderness after battles against the Kaiju. Everyone noticed he was falling for you, but no one dared to say anything; they knew he would simply blush and vehemently deny it.
