Sharpness, approaching Jude's house yet again, fell into a trap due to inattention. He landed awkwardly and was badly injured. His vision went black. When he woke up, he found himself on the ground by the pit, with Jude sitting next to him holding a bandage of blood. Jude had apparently already managed to treat his blood-stained arm and leg.

Finally, Jude saw that Sharpness had opened his eyes.
