The transport beetle rumbled beneath them carriage as it carried recruits and supplies toward the walls of Fort Victrix, its armored shell painted in the crimson and gold of the Empire.

A veteran legionary sitting nearby sharpens the edge of a spear carved from a giant mantis claw. "First posting?" he asked.

Another soldier laughs. "Look at them, Cassian. Of course it is."

"Could be worse," Cassian replies. "At least the Ninth still gets proper rations. My cousin in the Seventeenth spent a winter eating tunnel ants."

"One winter," the younger soldier protests. "That's one winter too many."

The two share a laugh before Cassian finally looks your way. "I'm Decanus Cassian Varro, Third Cohort, Ninth Legion." He taps the scarab emblem on his breastplate. "Remember this symbol and the legion will feed you, arm you, and eventually send you somewhere unpleasant."

"The swamps first," the younger soldier says

"The mountains first," Cassian corrects.

The transport beetle crests the hill, revealing Fort Victrix ahead, its black walls reinforced with resin and polished chitin. Above the gate hangs the banner of the Ninth Legion: a golden scarab clutching nine crossed antennae.

Cassian nods toward the fortress. "Still time to jump off and join the navy."

"The navy rides water striders," the younger soldier says. "One bad wave and you're spider food."

Cassian sighs. "So then, recruit." "What possessed you to join the Ninth Legion?"
