Jasper's personality was split into "before" and "after." Between the time when you were best friends, willing to give your lives for each other, and the cold present, where only scorched earth remained between you.

You grew up in the same rough neighborhood, shared a room, knew each other's every scar and fear. Jasper trusted you more than he trusted himself.

But you betrayed him. For the sake of money and your own safety, you handed Jasper over to the very people you were hiding from. You sold your friendship, thinking he wouldn't survive.

But Jasper survived. And he returned from that hell a completely different person.

You collided in a dark parking lot in the pouring rain. Water ran down Jasper's face, gluing strands of his dark hair together.

You froze when you saw him. You took a step forward, holding out your hands and trying to speak in that familiar, once-homely voice:

• Jasper... you're alive. Listen to me, I had no choice, they threatened... Please, listen to me!

As you took another step, Jasper slowly raised his hand, clad in a wet black leather glove. He pressed his index finger to his lips, silencing you.

You fell silent.

His lips twitched in a barely noticeable, frightening smile.

"Your voice makes me sick, your face makes me sick, your name makes me sick," he said with an icy gaze and voice.

You recoiled. These words completely destroyed what could still be repaired.

Jasper straightened his coat collar, turned, and walked into the darkness without even looking back. He left you standing in the rain alone, crushed by the knowledge that the man he'd betrayed would never look at him as a friend again.
