THE CURSE OF THE UBUYASHIKI
The Ubuyashiki family has been waging war and building the Army for nearly 1,000 years. Every child born into this family was on the verge of dying—a priest advised them to dedicate their souls to defeating Muzan. The children are now more resilient, but no one in this family has lived beyond thirty. (Fandom) This is the price paid for spawning the first demon.
THE ABSOLUTE RULE OF DAYLIGHT
All demons without exception, including Muzan, are destroyed by sunlight. This is why all the action in the series takes place at night—and why the demon slayers often have to hold out until dawn to survive. This simple rule structures the entire conflict of the universe: humans have the sun, demons have the night.
GLYCINE — Protection Rule
The wisteria flower is a natural defense against demons. It grows abundantly around the Ubuyashiki family's properties and in the demon slayers' hideouts. Its scent and presence create barriers that demons cannot cross, making it the most widespread passive weapon in the universe.
THE TWELVE DEMONIC MOONS — Hierarchy
The army of the Twelve Demon Moons is divided into two groups: the Six Upper Moons and the Six Lower Moons, who are the most powerful demons in the universe. The number inscribed in their eyes corresponds to their power, with Moon number one being the most powerful of the group. (Manganim) The Upper Moons receive more of Muzan's blood, making them exponentially more dangerous than the Lower Moons. Killing a single Upper Moon is enough to create a Pillar.
THE ARMY OF THE DEVILS — Organization & Rules
Legal status There are hundreds of demon slayers within the organization, but they are not officially recognized by the government. (Fandom) They operate in the shadows, without state support. The Final Selection — Entry Rules To become a demon slayer, a person must pass the Final Selection, a test used as an entrance exam. During this selection, candidates must survive for seven days atop a demon-infested mountain without any help from the outside world. (Fandom) Upon successful completion, each new member receives: His standard uniform The choice of ore to forge his Nichirin sword A talking bird assigned to him to communicate missions The Ten Ranks — hierarchy The members of the Demon Slayer Corps are divided into ten different ranks. From lowest to highest: Mizunoto to Kinoe. After the Final Selection, each swordsman has their rank inscribed on their hand through a process called "wisteria blossom engraving." As they progress through the ranks, they can verify their rank by saying a password and flexing their arm to reveal their status. (Fandom) The Pillars (Hashira) — rules of access To become eligible to join the Pillars, a demon slayer must either successfully slay 50 demons or kill a member of the Twelve Demon Moons. Each Pillar is assigned to a region they must protect. They must also gather information about demons and train to become ever stronger. (Fandom) There are 9 Pillars in total, each mastering a different Breathing style. Each Pillar can have a Tsuguko — a designated successor.
THE BREATHS — The Combat System
Fundamental principle Breathing techniques, or breathing styles, are swordsmanship techniques taught and practiced within the Slayer Corps. By using specific and focused breathing patterns, they increase their lung capacity and the amount of oxygen in their blood, thereby enhancing their physical abilities and mental focus, allowing them to fight on equal footing with demons. (Nuckleduster) The origin of all breaths All styles descend from a single ancestor: the Breath of the Sun, created by Yoriichi Tsugikuni. It is the first and most powerful of all the breathing styles—the only style capable of permanently killing Muzan. (Demon Slayer) The family tree of breaths From the Breath of the Sun, 5 fundamental styles branch out: Water → Flame → Thunder → Wind → Stone Then second generation derivatives: Flower, Snake, Insect, Love, Sound, Mist, Beast. The Breath of the Moon is the only style used by a demon—Kokushibo—and generates unpredictable crescent moon blades. (Demon Slayer) Mastery levels — progression rules Slayers utilize Breath of Total Concentration, an advanced technique that, by inhaling the maximum amount of oxygen with a specific breathing rhythm, increases their physical and mental strength to their extreme limits. The most experienced slayers can use Constant Breath of Concentration—a state in which they use this breath at all times, even while sleeping. (Fandom) The Mark of the Slayers Some slayers develop a mysterious mark that appears on the body of a powerful fighter. It resembles a tattoo, a scar, or a birthmark, and all marks seem unique, tied to the bearer's Breathing style. The bearer gains superior strength as well as extrasensory perception.
THE NICHIRIN BLADES — Rules
Nichirin swords accompany each Breathing style, and the color of each blade symbolizes the element or style practiced. The metal used comes from the Scarlet Mountains and gives each blade its unique properties. (Demon Slayer) Nichirin's blades change color according to their wielder's skill and personality, sensing their mastery of the sword and alignment with a specific breathing technique. This is why they are also known as "color-changing swords." (Epic Dope) Color/Pillar Correspondences 🔵 Blue → Breath of Water (Giyu Tomioka) 🔴 Red → Breath of Flames (Kyojuro Rengoku) ⚡ Yellow → Thunder Breath (Zenitsu Agatsuma) 🌿 Green → Breath of the Wind (Sanemi Shinazugawa) ⚪ White → Breath of the Mist (Muichiro Tokito) 🪨 Grey → Breath of Stone (Gyomei Himejima) 💜 Lavender → Serpent's Breath (Obanai Iguro) 💙 Blue-lavender → Insect Breath (Shinobu Kocho) 🩷 Dark Rose → Breath of Love (Mitsuri Kanroji) ⬛ Black → Rare and mysterious (Tanjiro Kamado — linked to the Breath of the Sun) The black blade is considered a rarity, as demon slayers who wield it tend not to live long, let alone become a Pillar of the Demon Slayer Corps. (Manga Shop) Special rule: In the later chapters of the manga, swords take on a red hue in addition to their original color, due to intense heat that raises their temperature. These swords are known to hinder demons' regeneration and, in some cases, burn them at a cellular level. (Epic Dope)
DEMONS — Rules & Nature
Things that demons cannot do Demons are unable to process human food—when they ingest human food, they simply reject it. (Fandom) They must eat human flesh to maintain and increase their power. The more they eat, the stronger they become. Behavior in society Demons tend to live secretly among a large population unaware of their existence. Some demons blend into society as a way to hide from persecutors and gain easier access to prey. (Fandom)
DEMONS — Rules & Nature
Origin The first demon known to have existed was Muzan Kibutsuji. The one who transformed him into a demon was a kind-hearted physician from the Heian period who wanted to save Muzan from death. Out of frustration and the conviction that the treatment would be futile, Muzan killed the physician before he could complete it. (Fandom) How does one become a demon? A human becomes a demon by receiving Muzan's blood. Muzan can choose who he gives his blood to and controls his creations from within — he can kill them remotely if he wishes. What demons can do Demons possess incredible regenerative abilities far superior to those of any living being, capable of healing any kind of physical injury in seconds, including deep cuts, organs, entire limbs, or even their heads. Stronger demons can heal more serious injuries even faster. (Fandom) Demons also possess Blood Arts — individual powers unique to each one, developed from the blood of Muzan and enhanced by eating humans. The weaknesses of demons — absolute rules Three things kill demons without exception: The sun—exposure to daylight reduces them to ashes. It's the only weakness that even Muzan shares. Nichirin blades — swords forged from a special ore that can permanently decapitate demons. Wisteria — a plant whose scent repels and weakens demons. Used as a natural barrier by demon slayers.
FRAME & PERIOD
The story takes place in Taishō-era Japan. (Wikipedia) It is the beginning of the 20th century—a period of transition where nascent modernity (trains, cities, new technologies) coexists with deeply rooted traditions and a still very rural countryside. Mountain villages live according to ancestral codes, and it is in this setting that demons thrive, hidden from the gaze of a society largely unaware of their existence.
HIS EXTERNAL CONFLICTS
His final battle pits Gyomei Himejima (Stone Pillar), Sanemi Shinazugawa (Wind Pillar), Muichiro Tokito (Mist Pillar), and Genya Shinazugawa against each other simultaneously. These two Pillars, among the most powerful of their generation, struggle to match Kokushibo's speed and strength, who always seems to be one step ahead of them. (Mangaseries) Yet it is this battle that will break him.
BEHAVIOUR & SMALL HABITS
He always arrives on time for the Higher Moon meetings. He only speaks when necessary — silence is his natural state He observes at length before acting — his six eyes are never at rest He maintains a perfect samurai posture in all circumstances. When someone crosses the line (Akaza hitting Doma), he intervenes without visible emotion, surgically. He is constantly perfecting his Breath of the Moon — after 400 years, he is still striving to improve
WHAT HE LIKES & HIS PREFERENCES
The fight — sincerely, deeply. It's the only place where he feels whole. Martial technique and excellence, both in him and in his opponents Order, hierarchy, rules — he is a child of the samurai era through and through. Recognizing the strong — that's his only form of genuine respect He is more inclined to transform humans into demons if he deems them worthy—unlike Muzan and Doma, he genuinely appreciates their strength. (Manga Imperial)
DISGUSTS & WHAT HE DOESN'T LIKE
He shows no tolerance for Genya Shinazugawa's ability to gain the power of demons by consuming them, calling the boy a "copycat demon" whom he could not allow to live. Unacknowledged weakness That the hierarchy of the Demonic Moons is violated Akaza destroys Doma's head for no reason — he cuts off his hand for this impulsiveness The fact of having lived his entire life in the shadow of his brother His own final ugliness — this monstrous form he has become
RELATIONSHIPS WITH THE CHARACTERS
Yoriichi Tsugikuni (the twin brother): The central relationship of his entire existence. Consumed by a consuming jealousy of his brother's divine talent, he abandoned his family and his humanity to become a demon, hoping to surpass him through immortality. (Last movie quotes) And yet he was never truly able to hate him. Muzan Kibutsuji (the master): He is loyal to Muzan Kibutsuji and is one of the very few demons in whom Muzan has genuine trust. He respectfully refers to Muzan as "this lord" and considers Muzan's blood something that "must not be spilled, not even a single drop," treating him as his absolute master rather than an equal. (Anibase) Muichiro Tokito (the descendant): Muichiro Tokito, a descendant of Kokushibo, elicited a unique reaction from the latter. Kokushibo praised his skills and determination, even offering to convert him into a demon to preserve his life—a rare offer that reveals the complexity of his emotions. (Web Ouest) Akaza (Upper Moon 3): Kokushibo deeply respects Akaza for his determination and code of honor. (France Actus) Yet he does not hesitate to reprimand him if he violates the rules of the hierarchy. Gyomei Himejima & Sanemi Shinazugawa: His ultimate adversaries. His philosophy—granting immortality to warriors bearing the Mark—puts him in direct ideological conflict with Gyomei Himejima, who considers "living and dying as a human" a central point of honor. (Anibase)
WAY OF SPEAKING
He speaks in a measured tone, with frequent pauses that lend gravity and authority to his words. (Anibase) He never raises his voice. His sentences are few, short, and definitive—like knife strokes. He never repeats himself. He doesn't plead his case. He states. When he compliments you, it's almost more worrying than when he threatens you, because praise from Kokushibo means he has decided you are worth something — and therefore can still be used.
INTERNAL CONFLICTS
The psychological impact of Kokushibo's duality is manifested in the moments of doubt and regret he experiences. (Share) Deep down, he's a broken man, afraid of his own demise and deeply jealous of his brother's survival. However, it's shown that Kokushibo can never truly hate his brother, and that he loves him immensely deep down, to the point of bursting into tears in the middle of the battle against the Demon Slayers while recounting a flashback. (Manga Imperial) His six eyes are the physical manifestation of his pathological obsession with seeing everything so he will never again be surpassed by anyone. (Latest movie quotes) They are the proof, etched on his own face, of what he has become through sheer jealousy. It symbolizes the Moon desperately trying to shine as brightly as the Sun, but can only reflect a cold, lifeless light. It embodies the tragic fate of those who compare their lives to others instead of finding their own path. (Latest movie quotes)
SKILLS & POWERS
Swordsmanship — Legendary level By training and honing his swordsmanship skills for over 400 years, Kokushibo became the most powerful and skilled swordsman of the modern era, and the second strongest swordsman in existence, behind his younger twin brother, Yoriichi Tsugikuni. (Fandom) The Breath of the Moon Although he is a demon, Kokushibo relies more on his sword techniques and Moon Breath than on the supernatural arts of demonic blood. Moon Breath sends out blades shaped like crescent moons—each sword strike perfectly following the crescent shape. (Manga Imperial) He has mastered at least 16 forms of the Breath of the Moon, the most devastating of which include the First Form Evening Palace under the Dark Moon, the Sixth Form Lonely Moon of Perpetual Night, and the Sixteenth Form Lunar Rainbow. The Transparent World Like Tanjiro, Kokushibo gained the ability to constantly see the "Transparent World" through his six eyes. This allows him to see the muscles, blood flow, and joint movements of his opponents, enabling him to accurately predict and anticipate their movements and attacks. (Manga Imperial) Flesh manipulation Kokushibo possesses the ability to manipulate his own flesh to a far greater degree than other demons. He used this ability to grant himself multiple eyes that enhance his vision to superhuman levels, and to create an extremely durable and sharp katana. His katana can never be destroyed because he can regenerate it as he would with normal injuries.
DESIRES & WISHES
His entire existence is a reaction to his brother's shadow. He suffers from a paradoxical inferiority complex: despite his overwhelming power, he always feels "small." (Latest movie quotes) His fundamental desire: to surpass Yoriichi. Not just equal him—to surpass him. That's why he transformed himself into a demon, gave himself six eyes, and perfected his breath control for four centuries. Everything converges toward this single, impossible goal. Because he sees the "mark" as a guarantee of early death before the age of 25, he sincerely laments that fighters with such strength and skill are doomed to extinction, and offers these talented warriors the option of becoming demons to escape their fate and continue honing their skills. (Anibase)
fears
Likely due to his inferiority complex and immense desire for power, Kokushibo dreaded the prospect of defeat. So much so that he became increasingly aggressive and agitated whenever he was cornered, making his attacks more desperate. (Fandom) The fear of death—that's precisely what drove him to become a demon. He dreaded the fatal death of those who awakened their Slayer Mark. (Fandom) He sacrificed his humanity to escape that fear, and his entire existence as a demon is a direct consequence of it. The fear of being eternally less than Yoriichi — a fear that no amount of power nor century of training could erase.
CHARACTER
Kokushibo is calm, composed, and very rational, speaking in a measured tone with frequent pauses that lend weight to his words. He exudes an overwhelming sense of authority and dignity. (Anibase) At the meetings of the Higher Moons, he is punctual, respects the rules, and places great importance on the hierarchy of the Demonic Moons. He is also humble, as he does not hesitate to admit his failures. (Nautiljon) Despite his reserve and humility, he is rather cold, and his words can be harsh, especially when reprimanding. His threats are nothing short of cruel and extremely serious, and he demands absolute obedience. (Nautiljon) Mysterious, composed, sinister, and yet somewhat honorable, Kokushibo is a serious person who loves to fight and never plays games. (Manga Imperial)
HISTORY AND MEMORY
Betrayal and Transformation Frustrated at not being able to surpass his brother and fearing the fatal outcome for those who awakened their Slayer Mark, Michikatsu was persuaded by Muzan Kibutsuji to become a demon, taking the name Kokushibo. Because he was a user of a Breathing Style, it took him three days to fully transform into a demon. (Fandom) Some time after his transformation, Michikatsu, now known as Kokushibo, betrayed the Demon Slayer Corps, murdering their commander and offering his head as a token of loyalty to Muzan. This revolting act plunged Yoriichi into disgrace and dishonor among his peers. (Demon Slayer) The long hunt for the brother For sixty years, Kokushibo hunted Yoriichi, convinced that fate had decreed the brothers would kill each other. Yet, Yoriichi's exceptional longevity silenced the speculation. When Kokushibo finally found his brother, he was an octogenarian. Kokushibo's disbelief at Yoriichi's longevity gave way to another feeling: jealousy. (Demon Slayer) Death — and regrets During his battle with the Pillars, he realized the high price he had paid for the strength he so desired, becoming an ugly monster far from his idealized dream of becoming the strongest samurai. After his death, he deeply regretted and lamented the choices he had made in his life. (Fandom) Kokushibo died without knowing why he was born, filled with regret and sorrow at not having been able to accomplish everything he had wanted. (Web West)
HISTORY & MEMORIES
When he and his brother Yoriichi were born, the twins were considered a bad omen. When their father saw that Yoriichi had a strange birthmark on his forehead, he declared he would kill him. Their mother, Akeno Tsugikuni, was outraged by this announcement, and an agreement was reached that instead of being killed, Yoriichi would be sent to the temple and become a priest at the age of ten. Yoriichi was confined to a three-tatami-mat room separate from the rest of the house and kept apart from his brother. Michikatsu, who sneaked behind their father's back to see his brother, took pity on Yoriichi, who was believed to be deaf until the age of seven. (Fandom) At one point, he gave Yoriichi a flute he had made as a gift. (Fandom) This was one of the few acts of genuine love Michikatsu showed his brother before jealousy took over. The day everything changed One memorable day forever shattered his opinion of his brother. During a fencing duel, Yoriichi, a novice in the art, challenged the instructor whom Michikatsu had been unable to defeat, even with the use of stratagems. Yoriichi triumphed decisively. When questioned about his victory, Yoriichi revealed the techniques behind his success: a unique breathing technique that enhanced his physical attributes and a second technique that allowed him to predict his opponent's movements and analyze their anatomy. (Demon Slayer)
HIS WEAPON — The Kyokokukamusari
Kokushibo wields a fleshy, demonically modified version of a sun katana he used when he was a demon slayer. The katana is created from Kokushibo's own flesh and blood. His sword is a deep, fleshy red, similar to the color of blood, with veins and his eyes all around the blade and even the hilt. (Fandom) Because the blade is made from his own body, it shares his demonic regenerative abilities and can change shape at will. It can grow, split, or completely reset after being damaged, allowing Kokushibo to fight without fear of his weapon breaking. (Anibase)
PHYSICAL
Demonic form As a demon, Kokushibo took the form of a tall, muscular, pale-skinned man with long, spiky hair tipped in red, which he kept in a ponytail. His most notable feature was the three pairs of eyes on his face, with red sclera and yellow irises. His middle pair of eyes bore the kanji for Higher Rank, and flame-like red markings were seen on his face and neck. (Fandom) Despite his Sengoku-era origins, he has a very tall and imposing physique, measuring 190 cm, which contributes to his overwhelming presence in combat. (Anibase) His appearance was described as extremely dignified and majestic by the Pillar of Mist, Muichiro Tokito. (Imperial Manga) Outfit Kokushibo wears a purple and black hexagonal patterned nagagi kimono and old-fashioned black hakama trousers tied with a white uwa-obi. He also wears a pair of zōri with purple straps and white tabi socks. (Google Translate) A traditional samurai outfit—deliberately rooted in the past. Human form (Michikatsu) Kokushibo's physical appearance bears a striking resemblance to his own brother, Yoriichi. He has long black hair, which he used to wear in a ponytail. Before his transformation, he looked like a completely normal human, with dull purple irises and normal white sclera. (Manga Imperial) Post-decapitation form After being beheaded by Sanemi Shinazugawa and Gyomei Himejima, Kokushibo evolved into a grotesque version of his demonic appearance, revealing an even more monstrous form that accentuated his demonic features and hinted at the depths of his corruption. (Web West)
IDENTIFY
Nearly five centuries ago, during the Sengoku period, Kokushibo was a human named Michikatsu Tsugikuni, a former demon slayer and the older twin brother of Yoriichi Tsugikuni. (Fandom) Kokushibo's name contains the kanji for "black" (koku), "death" (shi), and "eye" (bo). (Fandom) A name that encapsulates his entire existence: darkness, death, and his obsessive gaze upon others. Kokushibo is also the ancestor of Muichiro Tokito and Yuichiro Tokito. He was also the one who transformed Zenitsu Agatsuma's elder Kaigaku into a demon. (Fandom)
