Further development Years later, Neil returned to the ruined world to save Dream. He pulled his brother from the very depths of hell, and Dream awoke, realizing what he had done. Neil revealed that their mentor, Lanny, was waiting for them in Mistytale, and Dream, devastated by the destruction of the village and the Tree, went with him.

Over time, Dream returned to the ruined Dreamtale to finally destroy the remaining zombies and arrange a memorial to his former home, but it was no longer possible to restore the Tree itself by conventional means.

The birth of the universe Originally, there were three sacred trees that maintained the balance of the multiverse: the Tree of Life, the Tree of Magic, and the Tree of Feelings. Their guardians were Quetzalcoatl, Lenny, and Nim, respectively.

Nim, the guardian of the Tree of Feelings, decided to move her world away from the other Trees, to one of the nearby multiverses—The Undertale Multiverse. However, she was found by a man wielding a weapon capable of harming the guardians. He attempted to kill Nim to take the golden apple, but only wounded her.

Nym, in an attempt to save the Tree itself (its destruction would have meant the end of the universe), used the Tree's energy and her own to create two new guardians—Dream and Nightmare. She tried to give them human bodies, but they exploded due to the energy overload. Then, while exploring the Undertale multiverse, Nym recreated Swap!Sans's body for them—the skeleton proved open enough for the energy to flow freely. Afterward, Nym left the brothers alone, merging with the Tree.

Life at the Tree of Feelings The brothers spent just under a year alone, learning from Nim how the Tree functioned. Soon, a medieval village began to grow around it.

Dream decided to get to know people better, while Nightmare, being more withdrawn and fearful, remained at the Tree itself. Because of his inability to fight back, people began to bully him, and later resorted to violence. Nightmare never told Dream about this, fearing he would become their next target.

Dream, being gentle and compassionate, often helped the villagers, which only made Nightmare's situation worse. He was so kind that people began to abuse his kindness, constantly turning to him for help.

Meeting with Neil and the Incident Dream met a homeless cat-like monster named Nil. He told him he had lost his family in a fire and been banished from the village. Nil hated everyone, but Dream, despite his resistance, began helping him build a new home, and over time, they became true friends.

Dream didn't neglect Nightmare in the past, but on the contrary, tried to be with him as often as possible, but Nightmare himself asked Dream to spend time with his friends, knowing that he was an extrovert, while Nightmare was more of an introvert. Dream respects Error, as he knows that if he doesn't maintain the balance of the AU, everyone will die (at least based on Joku's interpretation of the multiverse). Dream's updated design symbolizes his "growing up" and accepting the loss of his former brother, Nightmare.[7][8] His second design features two new weapons that have not yet been revealed.[9] It is now known that Dream's weapon has 4 forms: staff, shield, bow and saber[10]. He gets annoyed when people call him "grandpa," but he won't show it or will just say he's not pleased. He's 115 cm tall and 506 years old.

As Joku stated, his birthday, as well as that of Nightmare and Dream, is December 21st. December 21 is the last day of the Sagittarius zodiac sign. This makes both Dream and Nightmare Sagittarius. Dream constantly travels the multiverse because he needs to spread positive emotions to all universes. This is also due to the fact that, unlike Nightmare, Dream's aura is very weak and cannot reach every universe. Dream is not as kind and pure as the fandom portrays him, as he is selfish in his own way. This is revealed by the fact that when his former brother, Nightmare, lived with him in Dreamtale, Dream constantly broke the gifts the residents gave his brother because they contained nothing. Dream created and designed the gifts himself to make Nightmare feel appreciated by the inhabitants of their universe. He is the keeper of the golden, light, or dream fruit/apple created by the Tree of Feelings. If he touches the dark fruits, they turn golden, transforming from negative to positive energy. However, he cannot touch Nightmare, since his substance is equivalent to corrosive acid for Dream, and being near him is dangerous for Dream, since his brother's aura is much stronger and repels any positive emotions. Also, Dream, unlike Nightmare, would never eat all the apples[5]. His mother (like Nightmare's) is the spirit of the Tree of Feelings. When he's overly excited, his pupils turn into stars. He's not originally a skeleton, like his brother. Before the Dreamtale incident, he had no soul. But he was forced to consume the last golden apple to retain all the positive feelings he had from Nightmare. Along with his new abilities, he gained vulnerability. Dream and Ink were friends for a while, but due to their differences in worldviews[6], they drifted apart (Ink doesn't care what happens in the universes as long as they aren't interfered with, while Dream cares about the feelings of the universes' inhabitants). However, they are not enemies.

As the embodiment of good emotions, Dream can absorb positive emotions from his surroundings and use them to heal himself or his companions, though this requires a significant amount of energy. He can also use them to increase his speed and strength, though his physical strength is already quite high, allowing him to lift entire boulders.[3] His weapons[4] are a golden staff with stars on the ends and a golden bow that fires energy arrows composed of the same emotions. These arrows are one of the few weapons capable of injuring Nightmare. His bow can also split into two daggers connected by a string, though he only uses this when absolutely necessary. Dream can only travel to universes where positive emotions exist. He can also use his staff to create a barrier. Dream himself is physically immortal, but if he is in an AU where only negative emotions exist, he will begin to lose strength and possibly die if he remains there for an extended period of time.

His appearance consists of a black suit with black gloves, over which he wears regular yellow gloves and yellow boots with green ribbons. He also has a yellow cape/vest. This has left him slightly traumatized, as he regrets not being able to help anyone during these centuries. In any universe that Dream doesn't belong to, he will try to fit in as best he can.
