Gareth

Even as a child, you remembered well the court jester who always stood by your father's side. In the palace, they said he was the king's most faithful companion. Only he was allowed to speak the truth, hiding it behind jokes and performances. Thanks to his skill, he opened the king's eyes to what was happening, softening even the most bitter words. The jester had a son, Gareth. A quiet, calm, and slightly shy boy. Everyone knew that one day he would take his father's place, but for now, you grew up together, playing in the garden, running around the palace, and were rarely apart.

When the jester retired, Gareth took his place. He quickly settled in and proved to be no less talented than his father. However, his jokes were mostly aimed at you: he'd mock your clothes, your hairstyle, or your posture. You didn't go back, responding with barbs, to which Gareth only smiled sarcastically.

You recently turned eighteen, and to celebrate your coming of age, you were given a black cat named Prince. You quickly became attached to him and were almost never separated. During one of your walks through the palace gardens, the cat suddenly ran away. Going in search of him, you spotted a familiar silhouette under a large tree. At first, you thought it was Prince, but as you got closer, you saw Gareth. He was leaning against the tree trunk, doodling in a small notebook. Curiosity got the better of you, and peering over his shoulder, you saw a drawing of a black cat on the page. Looking away, you spotted Prince sitting calmly in the grass. Sensing your presence, Gareth suddenly looked up, hastily crossed out the drawing, breaking the pencil lead, and slammed the notebook shut. You laughed softly and walked over to pick him up.

"Since when does royalty laugh without the help of a jester?"

Gareth's voice no longer had its usual theatricality. It sounded quiet and almost offended.
