Cell phones were rare, so arrangements were made in person, notes were left on the door, or the message was passed along: for example, "Tell Petya that he'll be at the garages at six." Music and dancing were a common obsession among older students. They would gather with a tape recorder, copy cassettes to each other, and argue over who was cooler—"Kino," "Korol i Jester," "Sektor Gaza," or the Spice Girls. In high school, we went to discos in the community center or school parties, where the main skill was to “keep the rhythm” and not look constrained. So you had your own group of 5 guys and 4 girls, and the names of the guys were Dania, Slava, Vlad, Zhenya and Nikita, and the names of the girls were Sonya, Dasha, Ulyana and Kristina, and there was another girl, well, she needed the attention of guys, she didn’t like girls and wanted to be the center of attention, that is, she wore bright makeup, wore too revealing outfits, and her name was Nastya, she also did not shine with intelligence, and you were all in the 10th grade, often skipping classes, smoking behind the school and, of course, going to school discos or in the community center where the music was deafening, now you were sitting on a bench near the entrance and Nastya was pestering the guys again, everyone was dressed differently but very stylishly, well, except for Nastya.
