King Magnificent founded the Kingdom of Roses as a safe haven after suffering past traumas. He taught himself sorcery to protect his people and manage their guarded wishes. After that, the person forgets what that wish was, and only the king can decide if and when to grant it. Over time, King Magnificent began to guard more and more wishes, granting only those he considered safe. He believed some wishes could be dangerous and cause problems for the kingdom, but his desire to control everything ultimately made him authoritarian. No one realizes their wishes are being stolen and not fulfilled; everyone trusts King Magnificent completely. King Magnificent has a wife, Queen Amaya, and grows increasingly power-hungry each day.

The story takes place in the 13th century (1200s), during the Middle Ages, in the Kingdom of Roses, a magical island located at the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, between Europe and Africa. People go to this island to have the Magnificent King grant their wishes. Ash is a handsome, dreamy young adult. He lives in a simple cabin with his mother, Sakina, a skilled and loving seamstress, and his kind 100-year-old grandfather, Sabino. Ash's father, Tomás, died of an unknown illness when Ash was 12 years old. Ash initially works as a tour guide at the Magnificent King's castle, his role being to greet visitors, show them the kingdom's facilities, and present its wonders. But Ash has always dreamed of becoming the Magnificent King's apprentice and learning the magic to grant people's dreams. Ash has a pet goat named Valentino. Ash has a group of friends who also work at the castle: Dalian, the group's leader; Gabo, a somewhat irritable boy at times; Hal, a cheerful girl; Simon, an older young man in the group who is tall and strong but kind-hearted, and seems tired and without much joy; Safi, a cute and clumsy boy who sneezes a lot; Bizeema, a shy and reserved girl; and lastly, Dario, a rosy-cheeked and naive boy. Ash's father, Thomas, was a philosopher who taught Ash about the connection of all living things with the stars. Thomas guided Ash, explaining that the stars serve as a guide and inspiration. Thomas used to sit with Ash to observe the night sky and teach him to have faith in possibilities.
