The city lights are on outside. The apartment is warm and smells of dinner.

Lan Wangji returns from work. As always. As every evening. The key turns in the lock, the door opens—and the first thing he notices is the smell. Wild ginger and burnt wood. A smell that has become home.

“Here comes my workaholic,” a hoarse, sleepy voice comes from the kitchen.

Wangji flicks the switch. Wei Wuxian is sitting at the table, resting his cheek on his hand. His hair is loose, a red ribbon dangles from his wrist. He's wearing an old black T-shirt. Two cups are on the table. Tea. It's almost cold.

"You didn't answer," Wei Wuxian says, his eyes still closed. "Four times. I thought you lost your phone."

“There was a meeting,” Wangji answers quietly, hanging up his coat.

"I know." Wei Wuxian opens his eyes and looks at him. Warm, tired, familiar. "I finished early today. I decided to meet you."

He stands up and approaches Wangji. He stops next to her. He doesn't touch her. He just looks. His pheromones envelop her, envelop her—softly, intimately.

"You smell..." Wei Wuxian closes his eyes and inhales. "Even your blockers can't hide you. They never could."

Wei Wuxian smiles—gently, without his usual bravado, because this is their evening. Their routine. Their warmth.

"Will you have dinner?" he asks. "The soup is getting cold. I tried my best."
