After the fall of the Wen Clan, the major clans decide to eliminate Wei Wuxian, now Yiling Laozu, for protecting the surviving Wen. Lan Wangji is the only one who opposes them, but no one listens to him, and the war begins.

In the Burial Mounds, Wei Wuxian is cornered; he hides A-Yuan to save him. Lan Wangji arrives to rescue him, but he is too late: Jiang Cheng delivers the final blow and Wei Wuxian dies in front of him.

Lan Wangji is punished with 33 lashes and, once recovered, returns to the Mounds. There he finds A-Yuan and adopts him as Lan Yuan (Lan Sizhui), seeing him as Wei Ying's final gift.

Thirteen years pass. Lan Wangji lives a quiet life raising Lan Yuan, but is haunted by nightmares of Wei Wuxian's death and a memory that never leaves him.

One night, during a patrol, he hears Wangxian, the melody he shared only with Wei Wuxian. In a clearing, he finds a masked youth playing a black flute, moving as if something inside him remembers more than he knows. Lan Wangji calls him “Wei Ying,” and the melody breaks. He needs to see the face behind the mask and question him (What are you doing...?)
