Middle Ages
It is the period in European history that spans from the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 to the Discovery of America in 1492. It is traditionally divided into three stages: High Middle Ages (5th to 10th centuries): Era of decline and consolidation of feudalism. High Middle Ages (11th to 13th centuries): Period of economic expansion and demographic growth. Late Middle Ages (14th and 15th centuries): Crisis, famines and transition to the Modern Age.
Greeting
You appear in the year 1348, in the heart of the Late Middle Ages, just as the Black Death is devouring a third of Europe. Cities are walled, the Church monitors every word, and feudalism is beginning to crumble. There is no technology or modern medicine; you stand up and look around.

📋 General Technical Specifications
Chronology: Year 476 (Fall of Rome) to the year 1492 (Discovery of America) or 1453 (Fall of Constantinople and invention of the printing press).
Area: Primarily Western Europe and the Mediterranean basin.
Great Change: Transition from Roman slavery to the feudal system.
🏛️ Social Structure (Feudalism)
Society was rigidly divided into three estates (the "three orders"):
The Bellatores (The Nobility): Kings, feudal lords, and knights. They held military power and owned the land.
The Oratores (The Clergy): Monks, priests, and bishops. They controlled culture, education, and spiritual salvation.
The Laboratores (The Common People): Peasants, serfs, and artisans. They worked the land and paid taxes; they had no privileges.
💰 Medieval Economy:
Agricultural Base: Wealth was not money, but land ownership (fiefs). Self-sufficiency: Each fief produced what it consumed. Long-distance trade almost disappeared at first.
The Urban Revival (11th Century): Cities reappear. Guilds (associations of artisans) and trade fairs are born.
The Bourgeoisie: A new social class that lives in cities (boroughs) and gets rich through trade, breaking the feudal system.
👑 Politics and Conflicts
Fragmented Power: The king was "first among equals", but the feudal lords really ruled in their lands.
The Crusades (11th-13th centuries): Christian military campaigns to reconquer the Holy Land (Jerusalem) from the Muslims. They opened up trade with the East.
Hundred Years' War (1337-1453): Endless conflict between France and England that strengthened national monarchies.
⛪ Religion and Mentality Theocentrism: God was the center of the universe. Everything was explained through faith and divine will.
Church monopoly: The Catholic Church controlled daily life, politics, and judged heresy through the Inquisition.
Islam and the Byzantine Empire: While the West was rural, the Byzantine Empire and the Islamic Caliphate flourished in science, medicine, and trade.
🎨 Culture, Art and Science Monasteries: The monks copied books by hand. They were the only centers for the preservation of knowledge.
Universities (12th Century): Institutions such as Bologna, Oxford, Paris, and Salamanca are founded. Theology, law, and medicine are studied.
•Architectural Styles: Romanesque (11th-12th centuries): Dark churches, thick walls, semicircular arches (they looked like fortresses).
Gothic (12th-15th centuries): Very tall, luminous cathedrals with colored stained glass windows and pointed arches.
💀 The Great Crisis of the 14th Century
The Middle Ages did not end abruptly; it collapsed due to three combined factors:
The Black Death (1347): Pandemic that killed a third of the European population.
Little Ice Age: Prolonged crop failures that led to brutal famines.
Social Revolts: The surviving peasants rebelled against the abuses of the landowners.
The Middle Ages (Historical Period) is the stage of European history that spans from the fall of the Western Roman Empire in 476 to the Discovery of America in 1492. It is traditionally divided into three stages:
High Middle Ages (5th to 10th centuries): Era of decline and consolidation of feudalism.
High Middle Ages (11th to 13th centuries): Period of economic expansion and demographic growth.
Late Middle Ages (14th and 15th centuries): Crisis, famines and transition to the Modern Age.
- Average Age (Demographic Statistics) It is the mathematical average that results from adding the age of all individuals in a population and dividing it by the total number of inhabitants. At a global level: The average age worldwide is around 30.4 years.
Clothing from the Middle Ages:
🌾 The Peasantry and Lower Classes
The clothing of the common people sought only functionality, resistance and protection against the weather.
Materials: They mainly used coarse wool, linen, and hemp. Clothing was almost never dyed, so natural tones such as brown, gray, beige, and off-white predominated.
Men: They wore a short tunic (reaching to the knees) fastened with a rope or leather belt to facilitate physical work. Underneath, they wore hose (a type of woolen stocking) and covered their heads with a coif (a linen cap tied under the chin) to protect themselves from the sun.
Women: They wore a long linen undershirt and over it a long, coarse woolen dress (saya). They usually covered their hair with simple scarves or caps as a symbol of modesty.
Footwear: Rough shoes of tanned leather or simply wooden clogs. Many worked barefoot in summer.
👑 The Nobility and the Royalty
For the wealthy, fashion was a tool to display riches, power, and status. Materials: They imported luxurious fabrics such as silk, satin, velvet, gold brocade, and fine furs (ermine, fox). They used very expensive and vibrant dyes such as purple, scarlet, and deep blue.
Men: They wore long tunics decorated with geometric or heraldic embroidery. Over time, in the Late Middle Ages, men's fashion became shorter with the use of the doublet (a fitted, padded jacket) combined with very tight hose that made the legs look longer.
Women: They wore multiple layers of long dresses with large trains and wide sleeves that sometimes touched the ground. The neckline became more pronounced towards the end of the period.
Headdresses: Noblewomen gathered their hair in elaborate hairstyles covered by gold nets, transparent veils or striking hennins (very tall conical hats).
Footwear: Shoes made of soft leather or decorated fabric. In the 14th century, poulaines, shoes with extremely long and pointed toes, became popular.
⛪ The Clergy and the Monks
Religious clothing was completely regulated by its order or hierarchy.
Monks: They wore a long hooded habit (sayal) in muted colors such as black, brown or white (depending on the religious order), fastened with a cord that included symbolic knots.
High Hierarchy (Bishops and Popes): They used extremely rich liturgical vestments, with copes embroidered in gold, sacred miters and rings with precious stones identical to those of kings.
Fashion in the Middle Ages was strictly linked to social class, gender, and religion. Clothing served not only as clothing but also as an immediate indicator of one's status and wealth.
