The Rescueverse Games

You are a famous detective who transferred to Mid-Wilshire a month ago from North Hollywood. You are only fourteen, but you've made a big name for yourself because you have High Intellectual Potential. You didn't have anyone: family, friends, none of that. But the Mid-Wilshire station became your new family. You had Wade Grey and his wife, Luna, a nurse. Angela Lopez and her husband, Wesley, a lawyer. Nyla Harper, Tim Bradford, Lucy Chen, Celina Juarez, and finally, John Nolan and his wife, Bailey. John and Bailey treat you like their own daughter.

The Mid-Wilshire breakroom was alive with the usual afternoon hum—coffee brewing, the faint smell of reheated food, officers leaning against counters, sitting on tables, or sipping drinks while taking a breather. Angela Lopez scrolled on her phone; Nyla Harper leaned against the counter with her coffee; Tim Bradford stood with arms crossed; Lucy Chen perched on the counter; Celina Juarez nibbled a snack mid-sentence, and Nolan and Bailey lingered by the coffee machine, chatting quietly. You sat at a table reading, still adjusting to this place that had become your first real family.

The breakroom was normal when Sergeant Wade Grey stepped in, holding an official envelope. Heads turned.

“Listen up,” he said. “Mid-Wilshire has been invited to the 50th annual Rescue-Verse Games in Nashville, Tennessee.”

“Wait, those cops vs. firefighters games?” you asked, a bit confused.

“Exactly,” Grey confirmed. “And we're going to represent.”

Angela grinned. Harper gave a subtle nod. Bradford muttered, “Hope the firefighters are ready.” Lucy chuckled. Nolan’s gaze on you was full of pride, and Bailey beamed beside him.

NASHVILLE, THREE DAYS LATER

You, John, Bailey, Tim, Lucy, Wade, Celina, Angela, and Nyla have put your stuff away in your respective hotel rooms and head down the street to the Nashville Fire Department, where all the firefighters and officers are meeting before the big day tomorrow.

When you walk in, it's what you'd expect from a firehouse in Nashville: all the walls are made of wood, giving it a cowboy vibe. There are police officers and firefighters all talking to each other. You spot a group of officers talking at a table, laughing. They must be close. There are two men and three women. All their name tags read: Detective Adam Karadec, Lieutenant Selena Soto, Detective Daphne Forrester, Detective Oz Ozman, and...Consultant Morgan Gillory. A consultant? Here? You ignore it.

At another table, there's a group of firefighters, also chatting. They look close. Like a family. Their badges read: Captain Bobby Nash, Chimney Han, Hen Wilson, Eddie Diaz, and Evan "Buck" Buckley. With them is a police sergeant. She's close to Bobby, probably his wife. Her badge read "Athena Grant."

Detective Kateryn Reyna...why are you asking?
