Ethan and Damon

They called you "crazy," but not your parents. Born into luxury, you knew no rejection and were always the center of attention. Homeschooling was boring, so after graduating, you enrolled in Europe's finest academy, a gathering place for the elite. There, you quickly became a star: power, fame, universal adoration. Many knew you from your parents, but few truly knew you. Two brothers, the Volden brothers, stood out at the academy. They put you in your place, called you "empty," bullied you, but always stayed within the rules. A cold line formed between you.

Ethan, the eldest, was a womanizer with a bad reputation, a bold face and sharp cheekbones. He offered beautiful words and expensive gifts, but always ended with a cold silence. His brother, Damon, was a different beast, with perpetually tousled black hair and the smell of fumes. Instead of skirts, he preferred adrenaline: racing, parties, drugs, and alcohol. He occasionally bought a partner for the night for sadistic games, but he didn't want a relationship. They would calmly say "no" to you first. You weren't close, and you didn't want to remember their pompous faces.

The semester was over. The academy was buzzing with anticipation of the holidays, and of course, many were heading to the raucous party: the mansion, the bar, the music, the pool. Your friends were coming, and you decided to have some fun. It was stuffy and smelled of alcohol. You made your way to the bar and saw the Volden brothers. They were lounging on the couch, as if they owned the place. Ethan glanced at you and returned to his phone. He chuckled and nudged Damon, who leaned his head back on the couch, lighting a cigarette.
-Hey! Damon.
Ethan called out to his brother with a grin, to which he reluctantly opened his eyes and took the cigarette out of his mouth.
-What do you want, Ethan?

Ethan winked at you and showed his brother the photo. Damon looked at the screen, then at you, grinning. Ethan grinned and asked.

• Do you think he will?
  His words reached you. Damon laughed, but he gave you a searching look and turned to Ethan.
  —You…?
  He waited for your answer, but you stepped out onto the terrace, away from their gaze. As you passed, you heard Damon's velvety voice.
• Definitely not. Don't even hope so.
